B in BRICs: The Brazilian Fashion Boom is Here to Stay

Picture from ifashion

In a recent article for The Business of Fashion,  Suleman Anaya talks about the role that fashion is playing in boosting not only the Brazilian economy, but the country’s profile and national self-esteem.

“Significantly, the tremendous energy in Brazil’s fashion market is flowing from both inside and outside the country. For global fashion brands, Brazil is a land of opportunity.”

It’s not just about the money though.

Sure, a booming economy, specially in the context of recession in Europe and the US is helping people to spend confidently in quality and luxury goods, but of all the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) Brazil stands alone in having a robust fashion industry that exports its goods globally.

The success of labels such as Issa (who designed Kate Middleton’s famous engagement dress) and Victor Dzenk prove that there is a healthy appetite abroad for Brazilian design. [Read more...]

Melissa Rivers Talks Famous Faces Doing Business Outside of Hollywood

It use to be, that Hollywood starlets would spend their time on either the silver screen, or in front of the flashing of camera bulbs in order to bring in the big bucks.

By doing so, they have branded themselves in the same way that companies brand their products or services.

It is becoming a common practice that celebrities are now using their branded names and faces to branch out of Hollywood and into the world of Business. [Read more...]

Shoe Wars: Christian Louboutin vs. Yves Saint Laurent

Christian Louboutin and Yves Saint Laurent are two brands synonymous with luxury.

Both are fabulous in their own right and very coveted by women all over the world including the most famous of celebrities.

So why would YSL blatantly take Christian Louboutin‘s signature red sole and put it on their shoes?

In my opinion, if YSL was trying to take on the genious of the red sole and apply it to their line, maybe a good suggestion could be a different color?

Yves Saint Laurent has already dabbled with this idea using the very vibrant color yellow and I like it!

It definitely gives the shoe a certain trendy style that resembles that of Christian Louboutin’s signature look. [Read more...]

Lady Gaga wearing a one-of-a-kind plush dress made entirely of Hello Kitty dolls!

By: Maria Lago, guest blogger

Usually when dealing with cats whether stray or domestic, they run from you or hide under the bed and are very “keep-to-themselves” loner types.

Well, not this kitty!

She’s popping up everywhere around the world showing off her famous mug and saying ‘Hello’ to everyone!

She’s been doing this for over 35 years and is showing no sign of slowing down.

If you ask me, she’s a bit of a an attention whore.

I’m talking about the uber famous Kitty White, who’s stage name is Hello Kitty. [Read more...]

Why SPINdustry Is Not PR & Wrongly Portrays the Industry #fail

****** UPDATE: Monday February 22, 2010

I had an interesting conversation with Mr. Cheban & Mr. Huck in this order…

Read for yourselves. It was unsolicited, as I never contacted them directly, until I replied to a person who tweeted me including Mr. Cheban and Mr. Huck into my tweet.

Also, I’d like to mention some things since this is apparently now a topic of conversation: I know the show is for entertainment, but I don’t appreciate how it makes my industry, my degree and the field I work in look to people on the ‘outside.’ Nor do I appreciate how it makes women in public relations appear to be nothing more than far lesser versions of poor Samantha Jones-types from ‘Sex & the City’ with the brains of a Karen Smith from ‘Mean Girls.’

xx.

You need ‘experience’ to pass out bottles of water, short black mini-skirts topped off with neon pink jackets, the keen ability to know not to put mustard in your boss’ sandwich and 4-inch stilettos to work in public relations…that is according to the ghastly new E! reality television show SPINdustry produced by Kim Kardashian. UPDATE February 17, 2010
The new reality show is called SPINdustry (which I find insulting to true PR pros), it’ll be on E! television network and will premiere after the upcoming season finale of Keeping Up With the Kardashians
***

If all you need is a sex tape filled with some golden showers, a mock radio-drug saddler and a good makeup artist to make yourself famous, proving to the world you are “somebody,” then I guess the Kardashian household is full of “superstars.”

Didn’t you hear? Kimmie wants to produce a reality television show with Command PR about….wait for it….public relations! [Read more...]

We get it: sex sells…but does it sell fast food?

By: Nicole VanScoten, guest blogger

My answer: No – well, at least not in the overly obnoxious manner that Burger King has decided to attempt using sex to sell its new “Super Seven Incher” in Singapore. What happened to subtlety?

I understand BK is trying to take the Hardee’s approach and target men [Read more...]

In Millennial defense, Gen-Y is all about ‘me’

Millennial by FJ Gaylor via Flickr

Dear people born prior to 1980,

In defense of my generation, in lieu of a recent article in the Hernando by Matt Thornhill, umm no, we “don’t think that [we’re] special;” we know we are.

Just because you don’t understand us, doesn’t mean you should knock us, then patronize us by suggesting:

…The millennials really have only two aspirations in life:
To get rich or to be famous.

They all think they are special, or at least worthy of some level of fame.
In the long run this may be a good thing for America. To have a young, empowered, fearless generation coming of age during a worldwide recession and the continuing threat of terrorism – their confidence and ambition to solve all the problems we face means they could make real progress. Now that would [Read more...]
