Paixão de Sapatos: Mauricio Medeiros and the Extra Four-Inches

Mauricio Medeiros Logo

Mauricio Medeiros is passionate about shoes: there is no question about that. And after interviewing this Brazilian designer and seeing his stunning creations, I became very passionate about them too.

In particular, while browsing past collections on his website, I came across these beauties here, which were not for sale, but, maddeningly, even had my name on them! [Read more...]

Cool Fashion Apps from Gucci, Hunter Boots and Havaianas

Gucci iPhone App

Many brands are betting on iPhone apps to keep their customer base happy.

Recently Gucci launched a very nicely produced app available in eight languages.

It offered travel advice for cities relevant to the brand’s history such as Portofino and Milan, plus glossy, magazine-like features showing how their products are made, interviews with designers, social networking live feeds and robust e-commerce options.

They sell it as an “all-encompassing experience for the luxury brand’s enthusiasts” and it is certainly a well-judged app. [Read more...]

Pure Amazon Magic: Swimming With The Little Pink Boto

Swimming with the Boto
The legend tells us of a handsome young man, dressed smartly all in white.

During the period of the Festas Juninas (Saints days in the month of June that in Brazil are celebrated with dancing, traditional foods and lots of fireworks), the man seduces unescorted young women, convincing them to swim in the river with him.

The next day, this mysterious man transforms back into his real shape, a pink dolphin, and is gone.

The story was even made into a film in the 1980s. [Read more...]

B in BRICs: The Brazilian Fashion Boom is Here to Stay

Picture from ifashion

In a recent article for The Business of Fashion,  Suleman Anaya talks about the role that fashion is playing in boosting not only the Brazilian economy, but the country’s profile and national self-esteem.

“Significantly, the tremendous energy in Brazil’s fashion market is flowing from both inside and outside the country. For global fashion brands, Brazil is a land of opportunity.”

It’s not just about the money though.

Sure, a booming economy, specially in the context of recession in Europe and the US is helping people to spend confidently in quality and luxury goods, but of all the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) Brazil stands alone in having a robust fashion industry that exports its goods globally.

The success of labels such as Issa (who designed Kate Middleton’s famous engagement dress) and Victor Dzenk prove that there is a healthy appetite abroad for Brazilian design. [Read more...]

LUXURY MARKETS: Why They Thrive Like Samba in Brasil

Image via Google Images on search

With the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, China and most recently South Africa) calling for a non-European to replace Dominique Strauss-Kahn as the new head of the International Monetary Fund on the heels of his sexual-assault scandal, ending what they BRICs (and alike nations) have dubbed as an “obsolete” rule by The West, it’s no surprise that when it comes to the growth in the luxury market, companies have their eyes on a new, never before imagined, future.

Even at the 2011 G20 Summit, Zhou Xiaochuan, who runs China’s central bank, said that it doesn’t matter whether or not the new head of the IMF is French or European, but that the new leadership of the IMF should reflect the growing stature and needs of emerging economies, implying the new leader should be from one of the latter.

It’s a clear shift in the winds of commerce into a New World, where “what once was” is beginning to take a second step into a new, certainly more exotic, way of life.

No one said it better than, Starwood Hotels and Resorts CEO, Fritz Van Paasschen, at the Global Luxury and Fashion Summit 2011

“Thirty years ago, in the Forbes 400, so many people in that group were heirs and had come from money, I think the term ‘nouveau riche’ had a clear disparaging aspect to it. Whereas today, most money is new.”

This, on the heels on his company planning no less than eight new hotels by 2016 (publicly released as of May 2011,) for their contemporary and trendy, luxury brand of W Hotels, in Africa, China and other East Asian nations. In fact, the W St. Petersburg opened  in Russia a little over one month ago, on April 20, 2011.

But while a lot of brands are still concentrating on Russia, India and China, with the World Cup in 2014, followed closely by the Summer Olympics in 2016, a lot more companies are focusing their attention on BRAZIL. [Read more...]

It’s the eternal dilemma when it comes to shoes, especially if you are a woman: do you go for comfort or beauty?

And as the days grow hotter the question becomes even more urgent, but reaching for a pair of Flip Flops doesn’t necessarily mean letting go of your pretty footwear standards. [Read more...]

Being green is one of those things – like eating healthily – that we all want to do but don’t always get around to. Recycling can be time-consuming, and researching which products are the most eco-friendly or ethically produced takes time that busy women with jobs might not have.

And for the fashion-savvy, the idea of actually wearing your recycling could seem like a step too far, but fear not. A hot new trend from Brazil is transforming humble soda can ring pulls into fashion must-haves, being extensively featured in the fashion press, including Elle Magazine. [Read more...]

The OTHER Social Network: Badoo … in Brazil

Image via WeHeartIt

By: Alice Bonasio, guest blogger

With over 112 million members, and a few more joining every second, Badoo is one of the fastest-growing – and profitable – ventures on the web.

In Brazil, though, it is a mass phenomenon, with over 14 million users registering for the service in under two years.

But there is still room for expansion, since Brazil has the largest number of internet users in Latin America – 76 million and growing.

Brazilians are avid Social Networkers.

A recent Synthesio report found that among internet users in Brazil, 86% were on Social Networks, compared to 74% in the UK and US.

So what’s Badoo all about and why does it work so well in a tropical climate?

It all boils down to its easy, flirty, “lets hook up” attitude, which really resonates with Brazilians, it seems. [Read more...]

Inhale Courage, Exhale Fear: Did You Thank GOD Today? (Que Sera, Sera)

“In life, God grants you opportunities, you either embrace them or you don’t.

It doesn’t matter who you are, it’s what you do that defines you.”

- My daddy

“Did you thank God today that you’re pretty?” said my friend Michelle.

I beg your pardon, what?

“You heard me,” she said. “Did you thank God today that you’re pretty?”

Umm, no.

“Listen, I may not be [Read more...]

** Disclosure: Sasha Muradali works for a WPP-held company. ***

When “Woman on Top” meets “Acelera Aê” you end up with a festive, foody advert for Arisco.

Just in time for the Carnaval season, thanks to the creatives at Ogilvy Brasil with a little celebrity help from Ivete Sangalo, it’s a bit fun and fantastic with the print images having us sing “Refrão“(3:15) to ourselves.

You may remember the romantic-comedy, released in 2000, starring Penélope Cruz and Murilo Benício (ah Lucas/Leo/Diogo, O Clone, we dieeee! [El Clon if you watched on Telemundo]) set [Read more...]

Inhale Courage, Exhale Fear II: Happiness, Heart and the Soul

“We are each responsible for our own life – no other person is or can ever be.”

- Oprah Winfrey

Sometimes we make things harder than they are, a life thrust forward into the twisted changing of the wind, under an immaculate sun, as I have come to call it.

In life, a lesson should be learned for each action we react to. Small or large, lessons learned teach us and facilitate in our growth. Without growth we cannot progress, we cannot move onward — most of all, we cannot achieve the completion of a fulfilled self.

Call it a rite of passage, the lessons of life, part of the eternal rising of the sun — call it what you wish, but embrace it because [Read more...]
