“And, when you want something,

all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

— Paulo Coelho (The Alchemist)

It’s been quite the second year and I’d be telling a fib to say I was expecting it — because I wasn’t.

Sometimes, when one door closes, or more than one door closes, we are lucky and blessed enough to have a few more that open. And it’s like Mr. Coelho said, if you want it bad enough, if you try hard enough — well, I believe him, something has got to give.

Little Pink Blog is a community, and some really wonderful people helped make it happen from friendships, to advice, to being professional pals, study buddies or a shoulder to cry on — make no mistake, I didn’t do this alone — and to them, I am grateful. The simple truth of the matter is that in 3-months we had 6,000 unique visitors, 2-years later I’m humbled and in awe of the 30,000 that appreciate all things LPB! Y’all rock my pink socks :)

Regardless, from Miami to New York and back and then there again it’s been an adventure… and while, I would love to share all my photos of my first year in New York City and my blog’s second year on the planet, I had to be economical in this post…mostly… well I tried!

Happy Birthday to me!
Happy Birthday to me!
Happy SECOND Birthday to my Little Pink Blog,
– Happy Birthday to me!
:)

Coffee and Crumpets: Catching Up with Jeannie Mai, Host of The Style Network’s “How Do I Look?”

By: Melissa Murphy, guest blogger

I had the chance to catch up with style diva Jeannie Mai, the host of The Style Network’s hit fashion intervention series “How Do I Look?” for a blogger breakfast at the Renaissance Hotel in NYC.

Jeannie was just as fun and spunky as predicated. She told us about moving to LA with only $238 and a dream to be Oprah, shared scoop about the new season of her show, and encouraged us to do what we love, while always helping and empowering others.

“How Do I Look?” is more than just a “makeover” show, Jeannie empowers women to discover [Read more...]

State of the Media: How the Disconnect Between Old and New is Change

via TIME

News is older than journalism itself and with the emergence of technology into the communications space, old media is clearly still having a difficult time merging their brick and mortar news approach into an integrated platform that clearly understands and could utilize social and digital media.

The disconnect between the old and the new could [Read more...]

Urban Legends and Myths of Web 2.0

At the 2010 Mashable Summit, I had the pleasure of listening to CollegeHumor.com’s founder Ricky Van Veen share tips he’s learned since his website’s inception about Internet content.

He made a lot of good points and a lot of his tips hold true for what just more than just blogging, I think they can certainly apply to the physical realm as well [Read more...]

Are All Bloggers REALLY Male?

via WeHeartIt

Last week I read this article in the Globe and Mail by Margaret Wente that talked about people having opinions, stating opinions online and how most bloggers (in the sense of what blogging really is) happen to be male.

I’m sorry, did I suddenly grow facial hair, have my Betty Draper bits disappear and suddenly don bits of the Don?

huh? [Read more...]

{Rules of PR no.35} 5 Reasons Your Mailing Lists Suck

Amanda Seyfried as Karen Smith in 'Mean Girls.'

Have you ever attended a professional event as a member of the press, blogger, or writer of some kind and the means of communicating the event’s updates were sent to you via e-mail?

That’s all well and good, right? Except when the event was over, you found that some random public relations person had decided to throw you and your e-mail on to a new mailing list that covers ALL of their clients…because apparently they have like ESPN or something and assume you really want to write about all these random people.

As I said previously, oblivious mass e-mailing is wrong — well this offense is right up there with [Read more...]

Fashion Directory on Twitter

Image via WeHeartIt.com

Right so the fabulous people that are the New York Times came up with this list and I’m just reposting it for you my lovely, Pink Book Fashionistas!

If you ever wanted to stalk your favourite brands, and the people who run them on Twitter, then this list is for you! I also added makeup brands to this list that weren’t on the original.

Below is a list of everything and everyone at the moment (September 2009), some of whom from bloglandia you should recognize in the Pink Book’s “Places I Visit.”

Enjoy :) [Read more...]

I am the Internet: Are you a Dependent?

via the Examiner.com

When Twitter broke a few weeks ago, I thought I thought I would cry. Then it nearly took Facebook with it and I was like, seriously? C’mon now…

The need, want and yearning I had once felt was gone. BAM!

Well, the mother of all things happened last week – Gmail went down.

Google, the mothership, went down.

#Gfail!

How could you do this to me?!

*one sentence rant over*

But yes, my friends, how dependent are we on the Internet? [Read more...]

Facebook killed the MySpace star and now it’s after the Tweeple

{CLICK for musica – Facebook killed the MySpace star and now it’s after the Tweeple}

Keep your friends close and your enemies on limited profile because Facebook sets motion to the death of Twitter….but Twitter isn’t dead, thank goodness, yet!

It’s okay to link your Facebook page to your Twitter account, but not the other way around.

I used to be an advocate of the “#fb” Selective Twitter Status application on Facebook which links my Twitter to my Facebook. Then the dumb application stopped working and after I tried about four times to contact the guy who created it with no such luck – I gave up.

And like I told @SteffanAntonas in a very thought provoking discussion about target audiences, after reading, “Status Culture – Public vs Private and Why It Matters,” I’m very glad.

My Selective Twitter breaking is probably the best thing to happen because [Read more...]

19 Commandments of Blogging

Ever since I started my blog, I’ve been asked the question “How do you do it?”

How do I do what?

Well, in the first 10 weeks my blog was open (starting April 13, 2009), the Little Pink Book, has done remarkably well. In its first full month (May 2009) it hit a little over 6,000 unique visitors. Not bad for a newbie.

So, how do I do it? Well, I’ll tell you… [Read more...]

Using the Internet to your advantage

It doesn’t matter who you are, whether you’re an author or a blogger or in a whole other field entirely, using the internet to your advantage is a must, must, must.

Email Signatures

How many emails do you send out a day? How many are to the same people? How many to new people? I bet it’s a lot, as email is the new letter. We use it all the time for communication. Your links to your website, your profile, your Twitter account, etc. should be in your email signature. If they’re not, you’re missing out on a huge readership.

WordPress

WordPress makes a great free blog and website. You can design your whole site around this free open source code. It’s simple to use and install, which makes this platform great for beginners. With hundreds of coders actively creating plugins to help optimize it, WordPress makes the most sense to use. In addition to plugins, there are tons of free themes to choose from that with a little tweaking can look brand new and totally your own.

RSS Feeds

Use them! Take your website, blog, Flickr, Twitter, etc. feeds and channel them all over the place. Your blog should post to Twitter. Your Twitter should post to Facebook. Both your blog and your Twitter should be posted at any Ning group you’re a part of in your profile. Trust me it’s worth the set up to get your content out there where people are spending most of their time.

Yahoo Groups!

Got a newsletter? Yahoo Groups is a great way to collect your readers and email addresses all in one place. It’s automated for joining and withdrawal and depending on how you set it up or want to use it, your group can also become a meeting place for others to join in the discussion.

Obama’s Beast Has Arrived in T&T

The BBC had it right when they said, The Beast looks like something out of a James Bond film.

Earlier today Barack Obama touched down on the Caribbean isle of Trinidad and Tobago for the Summit of the Americas (April 17-19, 2009).

The focus for the President for the 5th Summit’s meet, is the reentry of Cuba.

The purpose of the Summit of the Americas is to bring together various Heads of State and government officials in the Western Hemisphere. They seek to develop solutions, share ideas and promote prosperity throughout the region.

The Little Pink Book obtained some exclusive pictures earlier of Obama’s Beast arriving in Piarco Airport.

Why should you/we/us blog?

By: Keira Gillett, guest blogger

It’s a straight forward answer really.

As periodicals, companies, corporations, and individuals turn more and more to the internet it’s imperative that you do as well. Simply put blogging changes how people find and interact with information.

Being on the internet is not merely to be there as a website, profile, or calling card, all of which are static.

When you or your company go to the internet it’s to make a ‘Presence’ with a capital ‘P’ and to carve out of it a niche that is truly your own.

Used properly a blog or more specifically a blog article can and does go viral. This amazing reaction is something every blog should strive for and every company.

Blogging is a PR tool everyone should use because it’s:

  • It is accessible and timely because it’s easily updateable.

Like a periodical, a blog is meant to have new articles on a regular basis. By being on the web instead of print a blog has the potential to get into the hands of anyone with a computer and internet connection.

  • Over time it becomes a database of information about you and your company’s interests, policy, and products.

Think of blogging as a form of advertising. It’s a front line for Public Relations between you and the rest of the world. The more content on a blog the more likely you are to be found because your site will stay active, up to date, and build a database of information for others to find.

  • You can build a loyal following.

A blog is a great way to stay active with your consumers, clients, friends, and potential consumers and clients.

  • Searchable on two types of search engines: main and blog specific.

Blog posts appear in a timeline and can be pulled out of the web via searches in chronological order and also by importance and relevancy. For this reason it is important to update and improve search engine optimization or also known as SEO.

Blogging is just one type of communication, but a foolish one to overlook.
