Empire State of Sasha: Electric Daisy Carnival New York 2012

Where have all the neon, polyester flowers gone?

Or rather, were there any faux-flowers left in the Greater New York City area as thousands of gardlanded, flowered-out electronic music festival goers descended upon New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. for Electric Daisy Carnival New York.

I took a trip with the Italians and it was such an adventure, Charlie!

Through elementary school I was always mortified when my mom packed my lunch. I never got a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, a bag of chips and a juice box.

Nope.

I was always the kid who had bistec (steak), rice and maduros (fried plantains).

How ethnic! How embarrassing! [Read more...]

Jennifer Lopez: The Beautiful Disaster PR Powerhouse

by Maria Lago; guest blogger

All eyes are on Jennifer Lopez right now!

We are watching her every move, from what she wears on American Idol, to her Gillette Venus commercials with her kids and back on with L’oreal.

Before she was announced as one of the new judges on American Idol last year opposite Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson we weren’t really hearing anything about her besides the random photos of her and husband Marc Anthony with their twins. [Read more...]

OPI Gets Bieber Fever (#JustinBieber)

By: Maria Lago, guest blogger

What do you think of when hearing the words ‘Justin Bieber’?

My mind immediately darts to a crowd of screaming tweens trampling over each other as they tweet death threats to Selena Gomez.

I’m pretty sure, the people over at OPI Nail Lacquer thought the exact same thing when creating the new line for their sister company ‘Nicole by OPI’ cleverly named ‘The One Last Lonely Girl Collection‘.

I can’t think of anyone better to endorse the pop culture inspired collection than the Biebs himself.

How extraordinarily genius!

Picture this: you’re a 15-year-old girl in a drug store trying to decide which nail polish you want.

Should you go with the Essie brand for $4, the Sally Hansen for $5 or wait, there he is… a promotional cardboard cutout of Justin is staring right back at you whispering, ‘I know I’m $7.99 but c’mon you know you’ve got the fever!”

Yes, the sale goes to [Read more...]

While, browsing Twitter on March 5th, 2011, I came across a post from one of my favourite authors, Paulo Coelho, on his blog entitled, “Carnaval 2011: Filhos de Gandhy/ Children of Gandhy.”

I know I’ve been writing quite a bit lately about Carnaval and if you follow me on Twitter, I’m sure you’ve seen my #ytcarnaval tweets. Just a small bit of background information for some of you, my family is West Indian from Trinidad and our carnival starts as Canaval in Brazil is ending (March 7-8, 2011.)

Port of Spain, actually, boasts the second-largest Carnival in the world next to Rio. Ours is the one, exported and typically labeled as “Caribbean Carnival” in places like Miami, Toronto and London — the big one in Brooklyn? Notting Hill? and that thing in called Caribana in Canada once every summer? Yeaaa, those are my peoples!

So, while, in the past, I’ve never really blogged about too many cultural things… I decided it was time for that to change. :)

Anyway, back to Mr. Coelho and the band of people called Filhos de Gandhy [Read more...]

{ADbitious} Ogilvy Brasil Channels a little “Woman on Top”

** Disclosure: Sasha Muradali works for a WPP-held company. ***

When “Woman on Top” meets “Acelera Aê” you end up with a festive, foody advert for Arisco.

Just in time for the Carnaval season, thanks to the creatives at Ogilvy Brasil with a little celebrity help from Ivete Sangalo, it’s a bit fun and fantastic with the print images having us sing “Refrão“(3:15) to ourselves.

You may remember the romantic-comedy, released in 2000, starring Penélope Cruz and Murilo Benício (ah Lucas/Leo/Diogo, O Clone, we dieeee! [El Clon if you watched on Telemundo]) set [Read more...]

Ivete Sangalo + YouTube + Carnaval = #ytcarnaval

Love the Way You Lie: Eminem & Rihanna on the Vicious Cycle of Domestic Violence

Love should not hurt. Yet bad romances seem to be as common in this world as the ones true romantic stories as made from.

In his new controversial music video, “Love the Way You Lie,” Eminem depicts a glance into his relationship with his two-time, ex-wife Kim Mathers.

Starring Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan, the video seamlessly intertwines love and violence. The video opens with a couple (Monaghan and Fox) sleeping peacefully together. Next, they are violently fighting, tossing bed sheets around and the viewers see Fox’s character overpowered into early submission. Later, the couple is seen pressed up against a wall, where the man punches his fist into it, before they break into a passionate kiss.

The entire time scenes like this go on throughout the video, Rihanna sings the chorus which includes the phrase, “That’s all right because I like the way it hurts.”

Lady GaGa made a hit single out of bad romances, this is the fourth number one hit single for Em, and seventh for Rihanna — but is this really alright? [Read more...]

MARKETING ANALYSIS: K’naan, Coca-Cola’s Genius & the Song That Took Over the World, Wavin’ Flag

A week before it’s release date on May 7, 2010, I had heard Shakira’s anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, “Waka Waka (It’s Time for Africa)” and I was obsessed.

I tweeted about it, I Facebooked it and I told everyone how I couldn’t stop singing it in my status on GChat. Around that time, a great PR connection named Casey, who happens to live (and is from) in South Africa, told me, while Shakira’s song was awesome, I was missing out.

“What? Why?” – I wanted to know.

“Because,” he told me, “we like ‘Wavin’ Flag.’”

It’s the anthem about ‘celebrating life‘ he had said; a people song.

Me? Social media and world music lover not knowing what this was? How? I am addicted to world news and culture.

Stunned and utterly confused, I went onto YouTube and my eyes opened to, what I now consider to be, one of the greatest songs I’ve [Read more...]
