No Friends of Mine: LEGO Goes Pink

Pink LEGO

Let’s start by making something very clear: I absolutely adore LEGO. Its concept, design, products and company philosophy are fantastic. My husband is a LEGO collector who owns every variation of Star Wars minifigure the company ever released and is known on Twitter as Lego Master. Last Saturday was spent in a rapturous build and endless admiration of the recently released Jabba’s Palace set, and this year we have decided that all our Christmas decorations will be made out of LEGO, including their wonderful Winter Village sets, which are still boxed and waiting for December the 1st when we buy the tree.

Nor, I hasten to add, do I have anything against the colour pink per se. Apart from the fact that it would be weird for me to write for the Little Pink Blog and be a voracious anti-pink feminist, I believe that colours in themselves are not inherently evil, and that women should wear pink and buy pink products if they feel like it.

That said, this week I joined 61,000 [Read more...]

Ladies First at Luluvise: Is there such a thing as too pink?

Imagine a social network that is like one giant sorority: This is what Alexandra Chong has been building over the past 6 months since launching Luluvise. Her platform, defines itself as a space dedicated to “girl time, all the time”, and attempts to re-create the patterns of close female friendship online. [Read more...]

Social Hosting: An Airbnb Experience

Last weekend I test-drove one of the most talked-about travel accommodation websites out there: Airbnb.

I’m very pleased to report that

  • my first guests were not axe-yielding psychos
  • the house stands totally undamaged and as lovely as ever
  • my small furry one, Watson the dog, loved them and was loved back
  • the payment went through the very next day. [Read more...]

Facebook IPO: Is a $100 Billion Valuation Cool?

One of the most anticipated events in .com history is finally upon us: Facebook has filed for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) and everybody is speculating about how high the company’s valuation will go.

We asked a couple of experts to shed some light on the matter: Professor Mark T. Leary, of Olin Business School, believes that at IPO the firm will have a total market value in the $80 – $100 billion range:

“I don’t doubt that investors will be willing to pay that price for the shares, based on the valuations coming out of their past private issuances and recent online auctions for private shares,” he says.

But just because people are willing to pay that price, does it actually mean that Facebook is worth that much? [Read more...]

Little White Lies: Frozen Planet Fakery and the Fall of the BBC

By: Alice Bonasio

It is always sad when your heroes let you down, and this week one the people I most admire did just that: Sir David Attenborough.

When it emerged earlier in the week that certain scenes in the BBC’s latest wildlife documentary series Frozen Planet had been filmed in a zoo, I was truly shocked.

Not because they had used the footage of newly born Polar Bear cubs – which by any standards was amazing – but because they intercut it with scenes showing wild polar bears, with a narration that deliberately misled the viewer. [Read more...]

Paixão de Sapatos: Mauricio Medeiros and the Extra Four-Inches

Mauricio Medeiros Logo

Mauricio Medeiros is passionate about shoes: there is no question about that. And after interviewing this Brazilian designer and seeing his stunning creations, I became very passionate about them too.

In particular, while browsing past collections on his website, I came across these beauties here, which were not for sale, but, maddeningly, even had my name on them! [Read more...]

Vibrant Prints, Natural Fabrics and Brazilian Flair: Meet Anunciação

Anunciacao Shop in Sao Paulo

The Little Pink Blog loves Brazilian fashion, and we love to bring you some of the beautiful designs and collections that usually stay under the radar outside of Brazil. One such hidden gem is Anunciação, headed by designer Maria Elvira Crosara, who started the label in 1988.

The brand is well-known and loved in Brazil (famous fans including singers Zélia Duncan and Marisa Monte), with a flagship shop in the ultra-chic Oscar Freire street in São Paulo. It’s also very pink, and we like that!

So as we build up to the next edition of São Paulo Fashion Week, we got an exclusive interview with Maria Elvira, who tells us about the inspiration behind her prints, patterns and designs. [Read more...]

Making the Most of your LinkedIn: An Insider’s Tutorial – Part 1

My LinkedIn Map

I have been a LinkedIn evangelist for quite a while now.

After a slow start where I left my profile unloved and untouched for almost a year, I came back to it about two years ago to find a dramatically improved site where searches went much more smoothly and came up with extremely relevant results most of the time.

The rapid growth of the network also meant that more of the people I was searching for were actually there to be found, and as Metcalfe’s law dictates, the value of any network increases exponentially according to the number of nodes (people) that belong to it.

With a lot of trial and error and several hundred hours spent on it, I have now explored a lot, if not most, of what LinkedIn has to offer, and it turns out to be a great deal. I now have well over 1000 direct connections in my network, which I’m told link me to well over 7 Million Professionals. [Read more...]

Cool Fashion Apps from Gucci, Hunter Boots and Havaianas

Gucci iPhone App

Many brands are betting on iPhone apps to keep their customer base happy.

Recently Gucci launched a very nicely produced app available in eight languages.

It offered travel advice for cities relevant to the brand’s history such as Portofino and Milan, plus glossy, magazine-like features showing how their products are made, interviews with designers, social networking live feeds and robust e-commerce options.

They sell it as an “all-encompassing experience for the luxury brand’s enthusiasts” and it is certainly a well-judged app. [Read more...]

Natural Nail Polish Review – Scotch Naturals

Kiltlifter by Scotch Naturals

This week I’ve been trying out some new nail polishes which provide a solvent free alternative to regular ones.

I am a fan of natural cosmetic brands such as Lush, and was curious to see how this most chemical of cosmetics would perform with a formula that contained no nasties such as  toluene, formaldehyde or acetone.  [Read more...]

Pure Amazon Magic: Swimming With The Little Pink Boto

Swimming with the Boto
The legend tells us of a handsome young man, dressed smartly all in white.

During the period of the Festas Juninas (Saints days in the month of June that in Brazil are celebrated with dancing, traditional foods and lots of fireworks), the man seduces unescorted young women, convincing them to swim in the river with him.

The next day, this mysterious man transforms back into his real shape, a pink dolphin, and is gone.

The story was even made into a film in the 1980s. [Read more...]
