My%20Name%20is%20Khan Follow up on Post 911 Racist America: My Name is Khan trailer released

My Name is Khan movie post: Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol

“More Than Just a Name.”

In August 2009, I blogged about Bollywood super legend Shah Rukh Khan being wrongfully detained in Newark Airport on the heels of filming My Name is Khan:-

Ironically, “My Name is Khan” is the name of an upcoming Shah Rukh Khan film that tells the story of an innocent Muslim’s experience being mistakenly identified as a terrorist in the United States in the wake of 9/11. Khan will play a man with Asperger syndrome, which makes his behavior erratic. The fictional Khan of the film, sets out on a trip to find President Obama to persuade him that he is not a terrorist. The film has been picked up by American film company Fox Searchlight for international distribution after its release in 2010.

Detained by ignorance and a large set of misgivings it was a diplomacy and public relations nightmare.

But, less than six months later, Fox Searchlight released the trailer and you can see it below:-

From the looks of it, do you think it could be another contender for the mainstream western film industry, just like Slumdog Millionaire was?It will have major international distribution, by the way.

Or does it look very ‘Bollywood?’

Film to be relased on: Feburary 12, 2010

  • i think sharukh destroy terrorist remarks over muslim religion people.
  • It looks like a good movie, but it pushes a couple of buttons that Slumdog did not. That might limit its success:

First, it pushes the 9/11 button, which is a sticky subject for a lot of people. The subject can be navigated around if scenes are shot in a way to make viewers more socially conscious about how a segment of the population feels. However, the film opens itself up to criticism if it aims to make people question airport policy. Hint: the current policy debate is whether or not our airport policy is *specific* enough.

Second, it will have to portray Asperger syndrome correctly, which will be a challenge.

    Third, Obama. 'Nuff said.

Slumdog Millionaire wasn't really about anything as touchy as these three things. It may not have been a western film, but it did reflect values that many westerners aim to emulate. My Name Is Khan is a different kind of film all together. Whether or not it will be mainstream is difficult to predict.

Omg!! Its actully unbelievable...fantabulous!! Just read that the main lead Shah Rukh Khan is actually suffering from Aspergers'- a milder form of autism and takes a trans-America journey (to meet Pres) to sort of some unfortunate things that happen to their lovely life coz of 9/11...This movie, releasing at Valentine-Feb 12 will truly be a lesson of love and humanity for everyone..Most awaited of 2010- more so coz its distributed by FOX, people involved with Avatar and Slumdog!!!
  • We should stop referring to all of America as racists, and maybe newcomers will trust us. It looks like a good movie.
  • Hi M,

The original post, and this one, never said that all Americans are racists,
but rather said that we still live in a society where some are still living
in a very near and dear post-911 world.

I, myself, am an American and US Citizen, I do not consider myself racists
and I knew very few people who are, to be frank. This original post and this
one, which is a followup to the original, is about a situation that happened
in August involving one of the most popular actors in the world, so
incidentally is Muslim. What happened to him was was very obnoxious, very
    racist and highly uncalled for.

It was terrible public relations and horrid for diplomacy.

I hope that help clarifies the summary of both.

    Thank you for your comment.

    Best wishes,
    Sasha

This movie is surely going to bring about a change in people that Obama had promised. Its truly a movie that is one in a million. Awesome promotion. I just adore this actor, Shahrukh Khan, who is supposedly the most famous man on earth. Awaiting for its release on 12th February....Valentines week!!
  • Thanks for your comment!

I'm very interested to see it as well -- especially because it has the
backing of one of the biggest studios in Hollywood BEFORE it's released. So
    we'll see.
