Ever come across something so contradicting of itself that you sit back and wonder, “what?”
Yes, that was me this weekend when I heard Miley Cyrus closed her Twitter account (who boasted 2 million followers) because of lack of privacy…but then video blogged (more like rapped) about it on YouTube…and then joined Whispurr.
Go on…you are allowed to laugh.
Contradictions
Miley Cyrus deleted her Twitter because, according to her little hip-hop ode to herself, the tabloids were using her tweets as ammunition for their stories. We all know, it doesn’t take more than a click here and click there to delete one’s online account …but umm, Miley went beyond the extra mile to use the same outlet she bashes to defend herself…just on another platform or two, in this case.
You got it. I said TWO.
Cyrus contradicted herself by not only rapping about her decision on the world’s biggest social media outlet, YouTube, but she then went ahead and joined Whispurr.
Whispurr is a mico-messanging website that is a cross between Twitter and Posterous.
PR Stunts
With lyrics like:-
“The reasons are simple: I started tweeting about pimples. I stopped living for moments and started living for people.”
and
“Everything that I type and everything that I do, all those lame gossip sites take it and make it news.”
Miss Cyrus, uses social media to bash social media.
I do believe The Star or even People Magazine will have something to say about this. Not to mention, TMZ is probably in full-on glee at the moment.
Seriously?
Whether it is or it isn’t, in my opinion, this screams “attention! look at me!”
The proper term would be “publicity stunt”…especially, since she ended up on Whispurr.
…and then some.
Think about this too: her papa, Billy Ray Cyrus, took to his own Twitter account and tweeted the following
Miley. You are a light in a world of darkness. You were born”Destiny Hope Cyrus” for a reason. You can’t leave everyone now.We r countin on u
So, folks, what say you? Did Miley contradict herself? Is this just another stunt?
A little self-thought-promotion-esque, perhaps.
Well, whatever the reasons, motions, moves or steps, this is an example of a) how to look silly in social medialandia and b) how propaganda is done in web 2.0.
Sing it with me now,
“Welcome to the land of fame excess,
am I gonna fit in?…So I put my hands up
They’re playing my song,
And the butterflys fly away
Noddin’ my head like yea
Movin my hips like yea”
Little Pink Book’s Rule of PR #25:
Self-imposed contradictions are bad.
Whatever their intent, or lack thereof,
you simply end up looking foolish *cough!stupid!*.
