Aww, sadness.
I was a Boyzone fan when I was 10-years old and today, one of their members, Stephen Gately, passed away at the age of 33. That’s so young! My goodness.
Either way, for those you who don’t know Stephen was in an Irish pop singer who was a member of a gigantic British pop band called Boyzone. They were huge in the 1990s. I remember going to NYC with my family one Christmas, and making my parents hunt every single “import” section of HMV and Tower Records to find their latest CD (at the time.) That was when the Internet was in it’s newer stage — pre-iPods and Lime Wire, maybe Napster wasn’t even a thought then…whoa.
Either way, Boyzone broke up somewhere around 1999 and reformed back in 2008. Not going to lie, I was a little jealous of all those girlies in the UK who got to see them perform.
Boyzone had 6 number one singles in the UK at their prime:
* Words (October 1996)
* A Different Beat (December 1996)
* All That I Need (April 1998)
* No Matter What (August 1998)
* When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going (March 1999)
* You Needed Me (May 1999)
Stephen did the title track from the motion picture (that inspired the Tony Awards winning musical) Billy Elliot, called “I Believe:”
Where you a fan of Mr.Bean? What about the song from the film a few years back? You know the one where Mr.Bean defaces the Mona Lisa and repaints a new one from egg whites and a poster? Well, either way, “Picture of You:”
Boyzone, reunion medley:
Boyzone, “Love Me For a Reason:”
It’s crazy, but my #MusicMonday for this upcoming week is actually on Boy Band’s and Gen-Y. You can look out for Boyzone there, as they are one of the original boy bands.
Best song ever, “No Matter What:”
So if imitation is the best form of flattery — and we truly want to celebrate those in good humor, I give you: Britain’s Got Talent
Stephen Patrick David Gately
(17 March 1976 -- 10 October 2009)
you will be missed.
