If you couldn’t guess already, I’m writing this post with writer’s block. It’s way past my bedtime, but that’s the life you lead when you are dedicated to something and you love it. Well, that’s me and the Pink Book. But like you – I get writer’s block and I’m not going to lie about it – it sucks…majorly.
I don’t know about you but I love to write, but I absolutely hate it, and get so irritated with myself, when this happens to me. You sit down, you know what you want to say, but the words just don’t come out.
If you’re in PR, journalism, literature, history, law or anything that requires some level of extensive thinking, illustrated on “paper,” then I know this has happened to you.
Ever been on a deadline at a newspaper and have had this lovely gift bestowed upon you? It’s the worst!
What about during an exam? That’s even harder…and that’s when the utter b*^^$%!# starts to come out.
It’s like this suffocating, frustrating whirlwind that stifles your system until you just become angry and walk away.
Well, I’m here to tell you, don’t walk away.
Writing is a beautiful thing, it allows for expression, the communication of ideas and, most of all, it is the place where your thoughts are free.
From me to you, writing with writer’s block:-
Don’t force it
Take a break. I did before I wrote this. I was dancing around my room to old skool Paula Abdul thinking that those producers on American Idol are idiots. She’s coolness you know? I mean I remember being little 6-year old Sasha and dancing to “Straight Up” and singing “Co-co-co-cold hearted snnnnake!” Look for ideas elsewhere, they are there, you just need to find them.
You know, I could write about that now……
The Top 10 Reasons Why American Idol Will Fail WITHOUT Paula Abdul
…and there you have it, a blog post for next week (maybe.)
Think about what you like and what you know
If you have an open topic, give yourself less restrictions within the topic and make it work for you.
I knew I needed a blog post and I have writer’s block – so I’m writing about it.
Channel the focus of knowing what you want to say, to say something else.
Basically, don’t write garbage.
If I originally intended to write a {Beautirati} post for tonight and I just couldn’t get the words out – I don’t. But I have the focus and the “itch” to write, so I channel that energy into another topic.
Hence, we now have “Writing with Writer’s Block.”
It’s like Paula says don’t, “Rush, Rush” (and yes, that IS Keanu Reeves in her video below):-
Relax
Writing should flow from your veins into the pen and onto the paper. If it’s not doing that, your brain is too muddled, you are “all over” the place and that’s never good for any type of communication.
Relax, get a cup of tea [or your tranquilizer of preference]. Be not mistaken, this is different than simply “taking a break.” When you relax, you are not “thinking” about something else, searching for ideas on the web or in a book.
Maybe just sip your tea and let your thoughts consume you, until you are the one back in control.
Sometimes you need NOT to think about something, for the idea to click in your head.
Worst case scenario, use a life line and phone a friend. Your friends are an extension of yourself. If you call them with a problem, although they may not be writers, or bloggers, they still know you and know enough about you to shoot ideas off to you – for you. (**Thanks Michelle!)
It never hurts to try.
That’s right, it never hurts to try
So you don’t know what to say? Try saying something anyway.
Sometimes, the best things come from the most unexpected places.
There is a type of untamed beauty that comes from the unknown. Especially, in things like writing or art or music. So give it a shot, there might just be a bunny waiting in your brain for an opportunity to jump. But with all your over thinking, it can’t.
Set the bunny free – that’s all folks.

Some more Paula for your enjoyment --
(yea, my FriendFeed probably has a couple of these ‘faved’ by now, lol) Enjoy
