I love all sorts of “world music,” and I say “world music,” because as someone who lives in the Western world, anything that doesn’t make the Billboard Top 100 is considered “world.” Anyway, I basically have an iPod filled with the likes of Indian music (my culture,) Calypso (more of my culture,) Celtic, New Age, Rock, Alternative, some African beats and a ton of Latin flavours (I’m from Miami, what do you expect?).
I got into this Twitter conversation with fellow PR-tweeps, Danny, Lauren and Peter, last week about the Highlands and some pseudo-reality show, and other randomness involving some tartan newsboy caps. Well, I ended up discussing with Danny, a tad bit about Celtic music…which I love.
Now, I’m not a traditional music listener. I never have been. And by traditional I mean, sometimes, I prefer the contemporary versions of some songs as opposed to the originals (The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley and alike are excluded from this obviously.) This was more than evident in my previous Music Monday post on “Wuthering Heights: Hayley v. Kate.”
Either way, Danny inspired me to create an iTunes iMix for y’all this morning.
I call it “Contemporary Celtic” and it basically contains some of my favourite tracks in the genre, including, but not limited to:
- The Fairytale of New York by The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl
- Wild Mountain Thyme by Blake
- Buachaill On Eirne by The Corrs
- Heartland by Celtic Thunder
- Caledonia by Celtic Woman
- Last time by Moonlight by Enya
- Carrickfergus by Charlotte Church
iMix is below and well as a few YouTube Videos (that haven’t had their embedding disabled, grrr)
Enjoy

The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl(RIP) -- Fairytale of New York from St. Patrick’s Day 1988
Charlotte Church -- Carrickfergus
Celtic Thunder -- Lauren & I
The Corrs -- Haste to the Wedding
Celtic Thunder -- Heartland
Celtic Thunder -- Come by the Hills [can you believe he was only 12 when he sang this? OMG!]
Enya -- The Celts
Runrig & the Tartan Army - Loch Lomond at BBC’s Children in Need 2007
Celtic Woman -- Caledonia
And one more for good measure, that isn’t on the list — but I LOVE it anyway!
The Corrs -- Runaway
