Friday night, June 26, I had the pleasure of seeing An Evening With Il Divo and it was brilliant.
Consisting of four members, Carlos Marín (Spanish), Urs Bühler (Swiss), David Miller (American), and Sébastien Izambard (French), Il Divo was founded by Simon Cowell (signed to SyCo Records, a branch of Sony) in 2004. They are three classically trained singers, one pop singer (Sébastien), singing pop songs with a classical technique.
While, in all honesty, I’ve always been a harsh Il Divo critic, I’ve always been a huge fan. My biggest issue is that I always found that Carlos (bass baritine) and David (tenor) out sing each other a lot. There is no middle ground on the Il Divo CDs at all, it either sounds like they are screeching or the music is really good. Also, I’ve always found that it is a crime against great music to not hire a decent arranger for four guys who have four incredible voices. It’s a crime and someone should be sued!
Anyway, their best album, in my opinion, is the Christmas Collection and their first self-titled CD. (I also don’t think keeping original arrangements and singing a track in a Romance Language makes it romantic, but that’s another story).
Anyway, live — it’s all good. You can hear the full orchestra (they tour with one for “An Evening With…”) and if Carlos and David choose to belt out a song…well, it’s brilliant live. Nothing compares to live, real music, topped off with four excellent singers with incredible vocal ranges. It’s music at its finest.

On the CDs — eh, well, you can hear the imperfections, lack of control and how they are completely NOT in sync with each other…at all. Some songs on their CDs I think make my ears ready to bleed (though the same could be said for Katherine Jenkins, who IMO, butchers Popera, but that’s another story again.)
Either way, if you like handsome guys, pop music, with a classical twist and all around sitting through nothing short of a bloody brilliant performance — Check out Il Divo on their world tour!
It’s worth it.
Amazing.
