That Pattinson guy looks like a creepy crack-whore if you ask me. I totally agree with you, Star Trek is too epic to compete with.

Thanks for your input :)

I read all four of the Twilight books actually (and Midnight Sun online,) and I'm not a Trekkie either.

My poison of choice is Harry Potter and Jane Austen to be honest.

Edward Cullen isn't the vampire Lestat. He's more like...Ken with fangs. I think there is a distinct difference between Edward being based upon Mr. Darcy and Heathcliff -- versus being either one. Heathcliff is dangerous, Jasper is dangerous...Edward, eh, not so much.

Nessie (aka "Did you name my child after the Loch-Ness Monster") -- is a hybrid, yes. But she also is a broken rule in literary fiction and Stephenie Meyer shot herself in the foot with the character's creation. While, the teeny-bopper fan girls will dance and sing her praises, those who grow up, or are grown, will look back fondly -- then disregard. You don't set the standards of your "universe" as Meyer did...and then break the rules.

Good insight on the rest, regardless!

Best wishes,

Sasha

Okay, here's the thing. I am 23. I am well out of my teenage hormonal years, and yet young enough to remember them well. Your article reminds me of a feud of my teenybopperdom. You sound like an Beatles fan writing about how the Backstreet Boys just won't ever stay together and the fans will lose all interest soon and come to their senses and like the Beatles. And you know, a lot of Backstreet Boys fans did lose interest, but I personally still love them as much as ever. And as good as the Beatles music can be, they'll never replace the Backstreet Boys for me. And the Backstreet Boys? Still together, currently recording an new album.

I looked forward to watching Star Trek for a year and a half, and thought it lived up to the expectations completely. And yes it did have something to do with a hot guy in the movie. But it wasn't Quinto or Pines (who are both excellent actors but not anything too hot). I LOVE John Cho. I honestly thought he was hot in the movie, and I will watch anything with him in it. Okay, so I was a big fan of the movie, get it? Star Trek stars cannot replace Twilight's stars in the hearts of teenybopperdom though.

So is Twilight a teenybopper fad? Yes! Will a lot of the fans out grow it? Yes! Are all of the fans teenyboppers? No! Is it likely that teenage girls are going to abandon a story about a vampire who can't live without his soulmate for a sci-fi film? Unlikely!

"The thing is, Edward Cullen is a non-threatening, non-sexual ethereal being of childhood fantasy. That is his appeal; where it starts and where it ends. He’s like a Ken Doll with razor sharp teeth who will be outgrown when reality and the rest of your life set in."

Edward Cullen is very threatening. At any moment he may bite you and suck your blood out either turning you into a vampire or killing you.

Edward Cullen is also very sexual. He reigns it back in the first three books because of the whole blood sucking thing mentioned above, but if you've read Breaking Dawn then...well...you would know he is very sexual. Robert Pattinson's hair always has that "just shagged" look, and this is one of teen girls favorite features of his.

As for when reality and the rest of our lives set in, well I just don't think Trekkies have much room to talk here. I LOVED Star Trek, but you can't tell me that being a Star Trek fan is so much more "real" than Twilight, just because they have more creatures. I think reality has settled for me - college loans, jobs, friends are married and having babies. I love Twilight! I don't get the whole Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, High School Musical thing, modern teenybopper trends do not generally appeal to me. I like Twilight for its deliciousness.

And also, if you did read Breaking Dawn (I think you didn't) you would know that they have a few different cross-species pairings. *spoiler alert* Jacob, played by Taylor Lautner, is soul mates with Bella and Edward's half human half vampire child.

So, I respect your admiration of Star Trek; Chris Pines and Zachary Quinto are attractive men with excellent acting skills. Enjoy the fact that Trekkies have the reputation as most obsessed fans ever in the history of the world, and let the Twilighters enjoy their yummy Rpattz and Taylor Lautner. We're not trying to convert Trekkies, so don't tell us what our interests will be or should be doing!

I'm 19, and I loved the Twilight movie. The books - not so much. Even my boyfriend said, "I want to see what happens next!" at the end of it! My brother was the one to convince me to watch it.

At the same time, I also loved the Star Trek movie - it was phenomenal. Obviously, it completely blew Twilight out of the water, but that doesn't take away from the fact that "Kirk" and "Spock" come up very short in the looks department in comparison to Pattinson. I know plenty of my STRAIGHT MALE friends who admitted that they would be willing to "do" Pattinson!

Besides, I dislike Kirk's character. I don't like womanizer-type men, and I know it's just a movie role but it's still a turn off!

You speak of teenage angst, but that's just it - we're dealing with teenage girls here, and the first thing teenage girls are going to want to see is a pretty face.

Pattinson's got it.

I love star trek and it def beat twilight, but christ pine and quinto doesn't have anything on Robert Pattinson. Rpattz is too unique to be replace by anyone in this industry. While Hollywood is churning out hearthrob left and right, mr. Pattinson stands out with his musical talent and his humbleness. He is too endearing for this industry....he is not FAKE.

Wishful thinking on your part. The only people the two Star Trek dudes appeal to are dudes and Trekkies. I saw the movie last night and didn't find Spock and Kirk all that interesting, same as when my dad tried to make me watch Star Trek on TV all these years. No thanks. Pine and Quinto don't do anything for me they way Pattinson does. Pattinson just has this way about him that makes him so appealing.

I think I'll argue about the vampire bit for Bella just to be contentious. The idea is a bit bias as I'm sure if Edward was a wizard, werewolf, or demon she'd probably still love him best b/c it's him versus the creature he is.
