Harry Potter Mixology: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin Concoctions

By: Ashley Bryce and Liana Cole

By Gryffindor, the bravest were
Prized far beyond the rest;
For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
Would always be the best;

For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;
And power-hungry Slytherin
Loved those of great ambition.

Sorting Hat (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)

Hogwarts is divided into four living and learning communities named after the four founders: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin.

As Professor McGonagall stated in the Sorcerer’s Stone, [Y]our house will be something like your family. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room.

The Houses also compete for the House Cup gaining points for successes and losing points for rule breaking.

Each house is unique in traits and personalities with chivalry for Gryffindor, loyalty for Hufflepuff, intelligence for Ravenclaw, and ambition for Slytherin.

With each drink matching the character traits of the house it represents.

The Gryffindor House

The founder Godric Gryffindor’s house values bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry.

The colors are scarlet and gold and a lion is the house mascot.

Fire is the element.

A raspberry brandy drink highlights the rich scarlet color and daring that defines Gryffindor.

  • 1 oz light rum
  • ¼ oz brandy
  • ¼ oz lemon juice
  • 4 fresh raspberries
  • 2 tsp raspberry syrup
  • Lemon peel for garnish

  • Muddle raspberries in shaker
  • Add rum, brandy, lemon juice, raspberry syrup, and ice.
  • Shake
  • Pour into martini glass
  • Garnish with lemon peel

The Hufflepuff House

The founder Helga Hufflepuff’s house includes the most diverse personalities, for she would willingly to teach the rest.

Nevertheless, hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play are traits valued in this house.

The badger is the house animal with the colors being black and gold and the element earth.

A golden fruity drink is best for this kind house.

  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1 oz rum
  • 1 oz ginger ale
  • ¾ oz banana schnapps
  • Cherry and lemon slice for garnish

  • Pour in pineapple, orange, rum, and banana schnapps.
  • Add ice and top with ginger ale.
  • Garnish with cherry and lemon slice

The Ravenclaw House

The founder Rowena Ravenclaw’s house gathers students with intelligence, knowledge, and wit.

An eagle represents this house along with the colors blue and bronze and the element air.

A blueberry tonic is a smart drink for a clever house.

  • 1 oz blueberry vodka
  • 2 oz tonic water
  • 14 blueberries

  • Muddle 10 blueberries in glass
  • Add ice, vodka, and tonic water
  • Top with 4 blueberries

The Slytherin House

The founder Salazar Slytherin’s house is the most controversial of all the houses.

Ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, and a knack for the Dark Arts set this house apart.

The colors green and silver along with the emblematic serpent represent the founder’s ability to speak to snakes.

The element water matches well with this house.

A mojito champagne cocktail goes well with this prideful house.

  • 4 mint leaves
  • 1 oz rum
  • 2 slices lime
  • 3 tsp sugar
  • 3 oz champagne

  • Muddle mint leaves, limes, rum, sugar in shaker until sugar dissolves
  • Strain into champagne flute
  • Add champagne
  • Garnish with mint

Love these drinks!!! I can’t wait to celebrate Pottermore with my friends and make a few of these!

Thanks for putting these up again!

These drinks looks fantastic, but I must point out that the Eagle is not the bird of Ravenclaw. It is a Raven. Hence Ravenclaw.

  4. Thanks for commenting! But I have to point out that you are correct that the mascot is a raven but that is in the movies. The true mascot for ravenclaw as it was written by JK Rowling is the eagle. I would explain further but I’m not at home and it is hard to provide links on a cell phone. But please feel free to look it up.
