Jennifer Lopez: The Beautiful Disaster PR Powerhouse

by Maria Lago; guest blogger

All eyes are on Jennifer Lopez right now!

We are watching her every move, from what she wears on American Idol, to her Gillette Venus commercials with her kids and back on with L’oreal.

Before she was announced as one of the new judges on American Idol last year opposite Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson we weren’t really hearing anything about her besides the random photos of her and husband Marc Anthony with their twins.

Professionally she wasn’t making any headlines, her last movie The Backup Plan was a flop at the box office and she hadn’t made music in years!

I won’t even go in depth about a little movie called Gigli, the rise and fall of the Bennifer empire or the public controversial end to her relationship with Sean “P. Diddy” Combs (Puff Daddy at the time).

Jennifer has many memorable flops and lows since we’ve first heard from her back when she was a Fly Girl on In Living Color in the early 90s.

But don’t underestimate her, her PR strategy is so well executed, who cares if she can’t sing or isn’t that good of an actress?

We’ve known she is capable of keeping the public’s attention and making headlines since she came out on the red carpet wearing her infamous barely there green Versace gown to the 2000 Grammy’s.

Can we say ‘Overnight Sensation’?

She’s been quoted admitting there have been some failures in her movie career:

“I don’t know anyone who bats a thousand in the movie business. I’ve made some great movies, and I’ve made some not-so-great movies.”

Not only has there been failures in her movie career, but they have also creeped into the fashion line she launched in 2001 called Sweetface.

She goes on to say this was one of her most disappointing ventures because she didn’t have much knowledge of the industry at the time.

In a statement to the New York Times Lopez says:

“I just felt like I never got a fair chance to do it right. And on top of it, I felt like I was trapped in a situation I couldn’t get out of, and my name was stamped on things that I didn’t believe in.”

Even with several failed projects and a voice that Randy Jackson gave a 7 out of 10 on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this year, saying:

“She would definitely get a strong, solid 7.”

Ummm… not a compliment Dog!

Jennifer still manages to be on top in more ways than one!

Her star power exceeds anything that we have expected and she can thank American Idol for all her recent success.

Let’s just say, J.Lo is everywhere and she’s showing no signs of hitting the breaks.

She’s got a hit song and with Pitbull called ‘On the Floor‘, that is bringing her album a bit of buzz, but even though it’s not climbing the charts, the single is played 24/7 on all radio stations.

One of her greatest honors this year has been named the Most Beautiful Woman of the Year by People Magazine, I blame this on her absolutely stunning fashions she parades every week on Idol, her flawless face and equally fabulous hair styles.

Thumbs up to her stylists, she is the fashion IT girl to watch for all the must-have trends, at least I think so!

A brand new album, a new found fame for newer generations on Idol, perfume lines, an acting career…

… and now a fashion line with hubby Marc Anthony for Kohl’s.

They will be colaborating for a his -and-hers contemporary “lifestyle and home décor brand”, this time with the expertise and help of Tommy Hilfiger who is a partner in their new venture.

By the looks of things, Jennifer’s smartest move in her career was accepting the invitation to become a judge on American Idol.

There she gives her fans and soon-to-be new fans a glimpse at a more personal and compassionate side we don’t see when she’s strutting her stuff on any other project, which to me she comes off as a bit of a diva.

She’s no doubt a pop culture phenomenon, I just can’t wait to see what rootie-tootie romantic comedy she’ll do next, because you know there will be more!
