Lady GaGa, MAC, Sephora and the Branding Power of Hello Kitty

Usually when dealing with cats whether stray or domestic, they run from you or hide under the bed and are very “keep-to-themselves” loner types.

Well, not this kitty!

She’s popping up everywhere around the world showing off her famous mug and saying ‘Hello’ to everyone!

She’s been doing this for over 35 years and is showing no sign of slowing down.

If you ask me, she’s a bit of a an attention whore.

I’m talking about the uber famous Kitty White, who’s stage name is Hello Kitty.

In her make-believe land, Miss White is your ordinary cartoon celebrity who lives in the London suburbs with her family.

They’re a British family (yes, I said British) consisting of her father, George White; mother, Mary White and her identical twin sister Mimmy White. You can only differentiate the two by the fact that Kitty likes to wear her red bow on her left ear and Mimmy her yellow bow on her right ear.

If you want to know more stats about Hello Kitty that I bet you didn’t know, check out this cute little blog I came across: Hello Kitty World Blog.

Out of the make-believe land and kicking it back to the real world…

Kitty was first introduced in 1974 by a fresh new Tokyo-based company by the name of Sanrio and designed by Tokyo animation designer Ikuko Shimizu with the intent to target the pre-teen girl in all of us.

That they did! Girls around the world are going Ga-Ga over Hello Kitty.

We know this because we know of one particular girl who really did go Ga-Ga over the Kitty.

Helping Hello Kitty celebrate her 35 years young is the undeniably chic and edgy Lady Gaga.

In 2009, her Gaga-ness threw on some Hello Kitty attire and strutted her stuff for photographers Markus Klikus and Indrani.

My favorite one! Lady Gaga posing in Kitty's signature red bow with manga cartoon eyes drawn over her lids.

Hello Kitty has reached all corners of the world and you can virtually find any type of product, brand or celebrity imaginable to bear her signature look.

Three huge brands that got on board with Hello Kitty are Sephora, Kimora Lee Simmons and MAC Cosmetics.

Sephora’s line of makeup and accessories based on the cutesy character, hit their stores and online this year.

Needless to say all us girls were rolling around in all our pink glory thinking of all the products that Miss White will putting out through Sephora’s line.

Before the line hit stores, Sephora gave us this little blurb to wet our palette.

“She’s iconic. She’s adored. She’s known around the world. Now, Hello Kitty is bringing her playful spirit to a new beauty line presented exclusively at Sephora. This sophisticated collection mixes the essence of Hello Kitty with a touch of style and fun. With charming designs and luxurious formulas infused with ingredients she loves, Hello Kitty Beauty is the ultimate must have. Hello Kitty. Hello Pretty.”

Hello Kitty Bling Purse Mirror: I absolutely adore compact mirror. It is quite glamourous and to me, anything that sparkles, I’m a sucker for! The price of $49 is a bit steep, but that’s the beauty of Hello Kitty, nothing is too expensive if it’s by the adorable feline.

Nail Art Stickers: Make a statement on your nails and for $5 this is a Hello Kitty staple that is sure to fit anyone’s budget!

Glittercute Collection Made With Swarovski Elements: Taking the cake, the brownies and anything else you can think of is this Hello Kitty item. It comes packed with brushes, eyeliners and the swankiest of cosmetic cases. I could only imagine that a true avid Hello Kitty fanatic would think of buying this sparkly kit-kat for a whopping $495!!

Kimora Lee Simmons who’s better known for her Baby Phat clothing line cannot resist being a part of the Hello Kitty empire creating Kimora Lee Simmons for Hello Kitty.

Catering to all, Kimora made her line accessible to both lower and upper class spenders by creating two separate lines.

Kitty is featured in both sterling silver and diamonds.

Lady Gaga wasn’t the only one celebrating Kitty’s 35 years… Kimora Lee Simons did by designing these gorgeous 35th Anniversary Collection pendants. At $950 each, it is a sure-fire way to celebrating Hello Kitty in style. (Matching rings also available).

Much like Sephora, M.A.C. also had their introduction blurb to match Kitty’s style.

“When innocence meets M.A.C., anything can happen… Be transformed with the mild-go-wild shades, lashes and too chic-to-be-cute accessories of this special-edition collection.”

Jennifer Balbier, senior vice president of product development for MAC Worldwide also had this to say in 2008 prior to the line’s official release.

“To me, MAC Hello Kitty embodies the ultimate beauty icon, she’s sweet and sexy, slightly edgy, and appeals to a wide range of customers. We wanted to reflect that through a sweet side, but also something slightly mischievous when it came to the colors. I started out by creating a palette of pinks, since they fit and always trend well in the spring. And this look is so much about the eyes that we did two eye shadow quads.”

The MAC collection is by far my favorite one of the three.

It embodies everything I love, edginess, it’s dark and colorful all at the same time and super chic and trendy.

Though MAC online doesn’t offer Hello Kitty on their website anymore, you can be sure to still snag some great products off of Amazon.

The MAC Cosmetics for Hello Kitty ad campaign is nothing short of what the image of the line represents.

You can immediately tell it’s not the cutesy pink and proper style of the Sephora line, it has a badass take on the classic image of Kitty giving her an edge that we could compare to the one Lady Gaga gave her.
