Avon Brings 125th Anniversary Celebration to Madison Square Garden

Marketed as “the company for women,” sold in over 100 markets around the globe by over 6.5 million independent sales representatives and founded in 1886 in New York City, New York, Avon is the the world’s largest direct seller of consumer goods who is currently celebrating their 125th Anniversary on a massive, global tour.

For a company that sells four lipsticks every single second, where two out of five women across the world use their products, and who has donated over $800m to support their philanthropic pillars over the years, 125-years is not only a massive accomplishment but it speaks wonders about the female consumer.

Look at it this way, Avon had women selling products door-to-door, yes they call themselves the original “Social Network,” before the 19th Amendment was passed in 1919 in the United States guaranteeing women the right to vote.

The tour labeled as the “Avon BELIEVE World Tour,” is schedule to hit 16-major cities including New York City, London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Johannesburg, Moscow, Mexico City, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Shanghai, New Delhi, Dallas, Atlanta and Istanbul.

With the Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, proclaiming April 6, 2011 “Avon’s 125th Anniversary Day” and an army of special guests supporting, including Fergie, Yasmin Le Bon, Suze Orman, Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Saldana, Patrick Dempsey and Ivete Sangalo to name a few, the “Believe” tour is a true celebration of women.

I had the pleasure of attending the birthday celebration in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, the birth place of the brand.

“New York City is a special stop on the Avon World Tour since it was here, in 1886, that our founder David H. McConnell started this company with a dream of empowering women to earn an income to support themselves and their families.

Today, New York City and the surrounding areas are home to thousands of Avon Representatives and customers who believe as strongly in Avon now as our founder did 125 years ago,”

said Andrea Jung, Avon Chairman and CEO.

“And hosting our celebration with Fergie in the legendary Madison Square Garden truly makes this occasion even more memorable.”

For me, a particular highlight of the two-hour celebration, save six-time Grammy winner Fergie belting out an unscripted version of “Happy Birthday Avon” on stage, was Avon’s $100,000 donation to HELP USA, a New York City based non-profit organization that aides and supports victims of domestic violence.

“I have had the pleasure of seeing Avon’s impact on women around the world and I am so proud to lend my name and support to Avon’s great work,”

said Fergie.

“It’s an honor to be affiliated with a company that is so committed to giving back to the causes that matter most to women.”

One of the initiatives, I’m the most excited about is called Avon Voices — and is their version of the Idol series.

Part of their 125th Anniversary programming, in addition to the Believe World tour and the Avon Global Believe Fund, they are empowering individuals with an online singing competition for men and women.

With a song written by Diane Warren, and the support of Natasha Bedingfield, Delta Goodrem, Lea Salonga, Ivete Sangalo, Valeriya, Fergie and a few others, the program, launched in December 2010 in more than 60 countries, invites the world’s global Avon citizens to share their voices and become the next big thing.

Needless to say, Avon is definitely doing their part to make 2011 a year of celebration and dreams!

We love 🙂
