“Be always at war with your vices,
at peace with your neighbors,
and let each new year find you a better man.”
~ Benjamin Franklin
Tradition dictates that with the dawn of each new year we make resolutions: a means to fix our lives.
But, I’d rather not think about how to ‘fix’ life. I’d rather think about how to live it and rather than resolutions, make a list of affirmations with goals.
So, that being said, for you and for I, welcome to the future!
Even though you can technically change yourself, or improve yourself or circumstances throughout the year, I believe that the New Year is a symbol for change.
It’s the one time of the year (probably besides your birthday) that is a powerful time to say, “Enough,” to the bad things and “Let’s do this,” to make your world a more beautiful and brighter place.
Someone put it to me this way: imagine for one moment that you’ve won the lottery.
You are financially secure and therefore, your future is.
Now think about your life at this moment:
- What are you doing?
- How would you change your life?
- Would would stay the same?
- What would change?
- Would you quit your job?
- Does your job fulfill you?
- Would you keep working in the same place or look for something new?
- What have you always wanted to do and never have?
- What have you always liked to do and don’t do anymore?
- Are you happy with your relationships?
The answers to those questions are the answers to your New Year and, in essence, the truest you.
What is
your
purpose?
“Glory to God in highest heaven,
Who unto man His Son hath given;
While angels sing with tender mirth,
A glad new year to all the earth”~ Martin Luther
You see, today is 1/1/11 and that has to be special. After all, for me 10/10/10 was remarkable… on accident.
So not why — never why, how about why not?
What kind of world would be living in if no one believed? … even in the smallest of things.
Therefore, regardless of its numerology, the ‘now’ is a blank slate – a new book.
This book is called OPPORTUNITY.
If you see the world as a new place that you get to experience for the first time all over again, then the simple action of mind over matter can change your perception and, thus, change you.
Surround yourself with good people and believe in yourself. If you believe that you are worth “it,” so will everyone else.
Remember that because, guess what?
You are worth “it.”
Dream and invest in you.
Give yourself an hour a day to dedicate to you…
“I do think New Year’s resolutions can’t technically be expected to begin on New Year’s Day, don’t you?
Since, because it’s an extension of New Year’s Eve, smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system.
Also, dieting on New Year’s Day isn’t a good idea as you can’t eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to ease your hangover.
I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second.”
~ Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones’s Diary
And by the way, the lyrics no one ever remembers and butchers every January 1st at the stroke of midnight
Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syneWe twa hae run aboot the braes
And pou’d the gowans fine;
we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot
Sin’ auld lang syneWe two hae paidled i’ the burn,
Frae mornin’ sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin’ auld lang syneAnd here’s a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie’s a hand o’ thine;
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syneShould auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne
It speaks volumes doesn’t it?
Just take a moment to ponder, you never know what you’ll come up with.
