“Sweet Home Alabama,” a 2002 film, starring Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas, and Patrick Dempsey, is one of my personal favorite films of all-time.
It’s this deliciously entertaining romantic comedy about a sophisticated fashion designer named Melanie Carmichael, a rising star in the New York couture scene, who finds herself engaged to the city’s hottest and most eligible bachelor, Andrew Hennings.
In its twist, is that Melanie Carmichael, is actually Melanie Smooter, a tough-talking, rough-neck’s daughter from Alabama who escaped the backwoods and her many skeletons to fill her closet with fashion and make something of herself. One of those skeletons includes her backwoods husband — Jake, who she married right out of high school. He also refuses to divorce her.
Miranda Lambert – Gunpowder & Lead
Jake: [not recognizing Melanie in her sunglasses] Can I help you?
Melanie Carmichael: Well, for starters, you can get your stubborn ass down here and give me a divorce.
Jake: You’re shittin’ me, right?
Melanie Carmichael: I never fully understood that expression, but no, I am not “shitting” you.
Determined to make all of her dreams come true, she visits Alabama and chaos ensues as she tries to sever all ties with her past. In one absolutely delightful scene, after Melanie finds out that she and Jake still share a joint-banking account, she takes all the money and redecorates his entire house.
Coming home to find his home turned upside down, he opens the fridge to grab a beer,
Jake: What the hell is this? Chick food?
Melanie Carmichael: Light beer. Less calories.
