5 Tips for Good Social Media Public Relations For the Non-PR Person

Everyone’s in the social space these days.

It’s crazy.

My little second-cousin — who is like 11-years old — has a Facebook account (I’m half amused, half appalled.)

But not everyone is putting their best foot forward when it comes to the medium.

Some folks have gotten fired (or hired) because of the content they produce. Therefore, in order not to stand out in the sea of social media personal branding mishaps — take a lesson:-

  • 1) I wanna be a super model!

… except you aren’t one.

Pictures with alcohol and ciggies are fine, but make sure you LOOK fine in them as well.

Potential employers, co-workers and heck your own family will see you.

Don’t put anything up in the social space you wouldn’t want your grandmamma to see. People will know you’re the life of the party and had a great time — but that ‘time’ probably isn’t for them..or their office.

  • 2) Content is king! Now on your knees peasant!

Don’t for one second think that just by creating a Twitter you’re in the ‘know.’

Creating your Twitter is nothing — updating it is the key.

Just make sure you do not use it to whine, b*tch and moan about life.

Be constructive, find the positive in the negative and you’ll be just fine.

Don’t be afraid to have an opinion — just make sure its justified.

  • 3) Leave the trash to Oscar the Grouch

There’s a reason the dude lives in a dumpster.

You don’t, so don’t act like you do.

Don’t trash talk online, you just might end up looking like a piece of it.

  • 4) Digi-digi ME!

Know what’s out there about you on the web — Google, Bing and Yahoo! yourself.

It’s important to  know what’s out there, especially if its about yourself.

You have control over the ‘message’ about you that is sent into the social space.

  • 5) Im’ma BE!

…no, please don’t “be.”

Social media is about you, but it’s not really about you.

No on cares what you had for breakfast.

Get over it.
