Social Media and ADIDAS: The Quest

The final chapter has begun. At the 2010 FIFA World Cup â„¢, eternal glory awaits the fastest, the strongest and the most skillful. Join us for The Quest featuring The Spark, The Powerhouse and The Maestro. Who will lead his team to victory?

Sport, social media and football joined forces for ADIDAS in “The Quest.” It’s the culmination of the “Every Team Needs” graphic-novel featuring Zinedine Zidane, Lionel Messi (“The Spark”), Steven Gerrard (“The Powerhouse”), Kaka (“The Maestro”) and Xavi (“The General”), amongst others.

Perfectly timed before the FIFA World Cup in South Africa and integrated fully into social media, “The Quest” takes international football to a whole new level.

In a viral clip, available only online, Zinedine Zidane narrates this eighteen-month long strategy. “The Quest” is a live graphic novel full of social gaming, reactive tournament artwork, charity auctions, superhero content and a whole lot more.

“The Quest” invites all fans to log into their Facebook accounts and head on over to the ADIDAS Football page to engage in “match-ups.” This allows users to compare abilities and stats of key players in key matches in order to further encourage and appeal to the fever of football fans.

The “Match-ups” are posted before each game and fans are given the opportunity to vote for who they think will will the battle. Fans can write comments, interact with others and ultimately help “answer” which player will lead their team to victory.

“The Quest” has everything little boys and big men could dream of. It’s online, interactive, pseudo-real life and it’s pure sport. Also, let’s face it when the puppet master is Zinedine Zidane it does not get any better than that.

The campaign launched on June 8, 2010 with the help of German World Cup legend Franz Beckenbauer and the intense 90-second YouTube clip (in a comic strip style) called ‘Every Team Needs’ brand strategy.

I seriously LOVE this.

Personally, I think it beats Nike’s “Write the Future.”
