{ADbitious} ESPN and the AMAZING World Cup Murals

When ESPN decided to go all-out, full-out for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, they designed a unique and truly artistic advertising campaign with the help of  the American-based Wieden + Kennedy (New York) who enlisted the talents of AM I Collective Studios in Cape Town, South Africa.

Their promotional efforts include 33 original pieces of artwork each representing one of the participating nations and one general World Cup piece.

The look and feel of the pieces are a mirror the hand-painted signage and movie posters around Africa. The hand-painted style is something that can be found in the streets across, not only, South Africa but the entire African continent.

Each piece of art work tells the story of a nation’s plight to win the Cup, or rather, something that reflects their essence or a player they are currently best known for.

The images were hand drawn and then digitally coloured using Adobe Photoshop.

The colours are bright, the lines flow with ease and each evokes a kind of passion unique to the beautiful game.

ENGLAND

ENGLAND - Click to Enlarge, Magnify on Picasa.

Sad to say, but since 1996 England has always been a bridesmaid, but never a bride. In 1966 they won the World Cup – before and since, they’ve always been a top 10 international team, but have yet to repeat. The players seen are Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard

FRANCE

FRANCE - lick to Enlarge, Magnify on Picasa.

A throw back to the very French way of dressing in all the centuries past. Players are Henry, Anelka and …?

GERMANY

GREECE

GREECE - Click to Enlarge, Magnify on Picasa.

Very mythological looking, I imagine the wings are God like (a more successful Icarus or Hermes) and the ship is a Greek wartime one from ancient times. Of course, water is also used in Greek art, as they are a fishing nation and surround by the sea on almost all ends.

HONDURAS

ITALIA

Previous World Cup winners put to the imagery of Gladiators fighting in a Colosseum . The eagle was also a symbol of the Roman army during the empire, Caesar used it. They have won the World Cup four times, but I don’t see anything symbolizing it anywhere on the painting, except for the single, lone trophy.
