If there’s one thing that springs to mind when you mention Sex and the City, it’s fashion. Over the top, completely indulgent, fabulous fashion.
Over six seasons and two movies, the show has had a mega influence on style. It’s had us all drooling in envy for must haves like Manolo Blahnik stilettos, the Hermes Birkin bag (remember when Samantha used Lucy Liu’s name to get on top of the waiting list?), the iconic name necklace and huge flower accessories.
Sex and the City 2, the sequel we never believed was coming, premieres next week.
In honour of the release, let’s look back at the best and worse of Carrie Bradshaw style.

In one of the opening scenes of the first movie, Carrie is seen carrying a shopping bag through the streets of New York in a dazzling white and gold dress with gigantic flower detail. It doesn’t matter how ridiculously enormous the flower is, it just makes the outfit that extra bit fabulous. The look spurred a mass lust from fans and the numer of Google hits that mention this dress is pretty impressive.

Another of my favourites, the Carrie take on classic smart, this outfit was also worn at the beginning of the first movie. Not too over the top, but definitely not bland or boring. I think the feminine approach to masculine tailoring is just beautiful here. The pink in the shirt brings a burst of colour to the whole look and the black scarf is a cute addition. The huge white hat bag is the definitive Carrie touch to the outfit.

As summer approaches, I definitely had to include this one as one of my all time favourite gorgeous Carrie looks. The whole outfit is just so fresh and light. I love how the dress flows loosely and it all just appears so clean and elegant. The parasol is definitely the focal point and tips this outfit from ordinary floaty summer look to Carrie Bradshaw New York summer look.

In season six, Carrie uproots and leaves the bright lights of New York for the glamour and romance of Paris. When she first arrives in the French capital, all excited and giddy, she wears one of my favourite sexy chic Carrie outfits. Again, big flower detail features, and brings that ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the get up. What I particularly love about this outfit is the long vertical stripes of the skirt teamed with the narrow horizaontal stripes on top.

Another season six sparkler, Carrie wore this Versace dress mainly in her hotel room, waiting for Aleksandr to come back from tending to his light exhibtion. All I can say is beautiful layers! So glamorous and delicate, and although too big a skirt for most people to wear, or even manoeuvre out a door, Carrie pulled it off in style. And at a price tag of $79,000, we’d expect nothing less!

And now on to one of Carrie’s least stylish outfits. The bag lady ‘I’ve just got out of bed’ look may work for lazing around the house on a Sunday, but definitely doe not work on one of our favourite fashion icons. The oversize coat, the too short trousers, the trainers (seriously?! Has someone stolen her Blahniks?), it all just flings together as possibly the worst outfit in the entire history of the show.

And another abomination. This not so fabulous Carrie look actually makes me want to cry a little. Aside from the awful hotpants and the unflattering hat I think she may just have stolen from her grandpa, what I really hate about this outfit is the tube top; is that velour? The accessories really don’t compliment the outfit any either: the bag is distinctly unmemorable and the shoes do nothing to dimish the dreadful effect the hotpants have on her usually gorgeous legs.

And moving from fictional character to real life diva, Sarah Jessica Parker, although at times not as adventurous as Carrie, always looks perfectly polished. Her usual sophisticated glam showed a side indulging her inner Carrie at the premiere of the first Sex and the City movie. Who can forget the hat she wore to the London premiere? The Philip Treacy creation caused a media frenzy as photographers went mad over the green voluptuous fascinator and its acorn, flower and butterfly detail.
With the release of the second movie arriving next week, I’m curious to see what the outfits will be like this time round. Considering that a fair chunk of the movie looks as though it is set in Abu Dhabi, I’m sure we are all wondering how Carrie and co. will tread the sand dunes in Louboutins! Regardless of the scorching heat, I’m hoping for even more glamour, lashings of designer indulgence and, most importantly, countless fabulous shoes!
