Oh no they didn’t! Oh yes, indeed, they did. Advertising Barbie and Ken are here!
Now you too, ladies and gay gents, can take home your very own Don Draper, Roger Sterling, Joan Holloway and Betty Draper from Mattel.
From Oprah, to Jeopardy, to Saturday Night Live to a Simpson’s spoof — it’s all about advertising in the 1960s.
Releasing later in 2010, the dolls are part of Mattel’s Barbie Fashion Model Collection and will retail for approximately $74.95 USD each. Considered premium-price collector’s dolls, they are in the same company as the I Love Lucy and The X-Files dolls Mattel has released in the past.
Mad Men is a drama on the AMC cable channel that goes through the lives, loves and smoke of the Sterling Cooper advertising agency on Madison Avenue in the 1960s. Three seasons and a couple of Emmy Awards later, it’s the sleeper show that became a sensation for the cable network.
But don’t be fooled, if you are under the impression these dolls are for young girls — even if the price was not an indicator enough –Â they are not.
The dolls being made are Don Draper, who has a habit for adultery (a first for the ‘wholesome’ brand), his wife, Betty Draper, a chain smoker and participant of adultery herself, his alcoholic and often lax colleague, Roger Sterling (the ‘Sterling’ of Sterling Cooper Advertising), and Joan Holloway, who was introduced to viewers in season one as Roger’s mistress (another Mattel first) as well as the office’s head secretary (though since then, she’s left Roger, the agency and gotten married. But returned as a part-time secretary at the end of season three.)
For the sake of the Barbie, Mattle and their “image,” they’ve kept the Mad Men-esque things to a slight minimum — the dolls come with period accessories such as hats, overcoats, pearls and padded undergarments.
However, there will be no cigarettes, ashtrays, martini glasses or cocktail shakers.
This Mad Woman is exceptionally excited about this.
You can bet your Tom Collins, I’ll be getting my very own Draper McDreaminess!
