He’s November 2009’s cover boy for Details Magazine and his scorching photos ooze sex, a classic persona and question if Adam Lambert got too hot, too soon for American Idol.

American Idol‘s 2009 second place runner-up Adam Labert (or as Perez Hilton calls him ‘Glambert’) is gracing the pages of Details Magazine…with a naked woman…that he can be seen making out with and on the verge of licking.

Adam looks amazing. Literally, his hair, his clothes — heck I want a manicure like that. It’s an inverted half-moon manicure (circa 1950s United States 🙂 — take that Mad Men fans!) To a certain extent he even reminds me of James Dean in one particular black and white photo: a white shirt, dark jeans, profiled and oh so sexy — tough cookies for us women because Adam Lambert is gay folks.

“I am gay, but I like kissing women sometimes. Women are pretty. It doesn’t mean I’m necessarily sleeping with them.” – Adam Lambert in Details Magazine.

He’s the first American Idol contestant to be flaunt his sexuality off the show and not only that but he goes against the American Idol ‘mold’ for his edgey wardrobe, unique song choices, painted nails, wild hair and sometimes excessive sexiness…which is exactly what you see in his Details photo spread.

The thing is, American Idol is a brand and it’s winners have to adhere to what it is to be a part of that brand until their immediate time with Idol is over. It’s part of the pop-machine and the brand is what keeps those gears turning.

Idol is a conservative brand for the most past, where it’s artists on the show  are squeaky clean or they kicked-off by the producers. They have to embody the melting pot of the Americana.

Why?

Because American Idol‘s biggest audience is pre-teen and teenage girls whose parents control their allowances.  Traditionally, teeny bopper and pre-teen parents won’t allow their kids to be a part of something that is hyper-sexual. It goes against societal norms; it goes against the norm of American Idol.

But, that’s what Adam Lambert’s Details Magazine spread looks like.  It’s another part of his personality (or one invented part) that I’m sure not a lot of fans knew of.

That could mean trouble for his Idol status.

“It’s all fantasy – that’s what entertainment is. I’m here to entertain you, and if my sexuality is apparent and you respond to it, and you’re attracted to it, then great, I’m doing my job.” – Adam Lambert in Details Magazine.

Think of it along the same lines of the tight reigns Disney has on Vanessa Hudgens and Miley Cyrus: apologies, public appearances by their parents to call for forgiveness for their actions, organized press events to ‘fix’ their images and maintain the Disney brand etc. etc. etc.

That’s American Idol.

“There’s a feeling of entitlement [with the fans] because they voted to get us where we are. But you know what? I am responsible for what I created on the show. You voted for what I created, and thank you, but I created it, you didn’t.” – Adam Lambert in Details Magazine.

Arguably, Lambert should have been the winner of his season based on his track record and constant set of praises from the judges. At one point Kris Allen, the season’s winner, even thought Adam was going to win…but Adam didn’t.

Was there something, that the Idol voting audience saw and recognized then? Was he against THEIR idea of the Idol brand and they voted otherwise?

It’s something to think about.

But nonetheless, the openly gay star has opened a new door with these photos and what will happen with his brand — only time will tell.

So really and truly, is Adam Lambert too hot? Is there such a thing?

  1. lambfankathy says

Adam is not with Idol anymore. He is his own entertainer and as he says if you don't like sexy music then don't listen. Goes for all aspects of his entertaining style i would think.

  2. Hi Kathy,

Are you sure his contract is over wit them?

What about his “image” as part of the Idol group? Do you not think he may or
may not have an obligation to that brand?

    Thanks for sharing your opinion!

    Best wishes,
    Sasha

  3. Adam didn't win Idol because his fans got too comfortable and never picked up the phone. I never voted once for Adam but shelled out over $1000 to see him twice in concert over the summer. Plus $200+ for his limited edition necklace, I plan on buying all 4 version of his album. And anyone who saw the Idol tour knows that the majority of that audience was there for Adam. Look up any review (except in Arkansas) the crowd was there for him and it was the same at my shows.

Adam has brought in people who don't normally watch American Idol (like myself) who admired his talent but didn't necessarily pick up the phone to vote for him because it seemed a waste of time. I have no doubt he will be a big star and his less-than-cleancut image only sets him apart and makes him DIFFERENT. Unlike the David Cook and Kris Allen's of the world.

  4. Haha! Anyone who saw Adam in concert knows that TPTB let him do whatever the hell he wanted. He was VERY sexual on stage in a way that no other Idol has been in the past and they never asked him to turn it down. From dancing with sex toys to simulating sex with the microphone stand…he did it all and the audience LOVED it.

Sex sells. Everyone knows that and Adam Lambert is hot. Couldn't be simpler!

  5. I think not winning Idol freed him from any obligation to represent the brand. That responsibility is with the winner and Allen is a better fit for that brand anyway.
Maybe that is why they allowed the rumored Arkansas votes in the first place? I've always thought the results was the best for everybody involved. Kris gets the shots he might not have received without the win, AI got their 'apple pie' Idol to represent their brand and Adam can express himself without having to think of the children.

  6. His own solo shows or the Idol shows?

What you just described reminds me of Robin Thicke, lol…except, he's normally high off of something at his shows.

  7. That's a great point that NOT winning Idol freed him from the brand. I mean look at Clay Aiken.
While, still conservative as is his nature, he is under far less pressure and spotlight to 'succeed' or fit the brand as Ruben Studdard, was and continues to be.

On the same note, look at what happened to Fantastia in terms of the brand — she gets rips apart ALL the time.

I agree with you about the “apple pie” Idol as well. Kris Allen is very much so “Americana” in the finest sense.

    Thanks for your comments!

  8. Wow, that's a lot of $$$$, you must really like him 🙂

That's great. I'm very happy you got to see a performer that was that important to you!

I really agree with you when you say his fans got to comfortable with him, not to vote. That makes a lot of sense.

But on the same note, Adam's performance on the show was vastly different to the 'performer' he is now. He said it himself, people fell in love with what they saw, what he invented etc.

I think that is so interesting because what Adam is now releasing and post-Idol, is his true self (we are told), but it goes against the “apple pie” (as another commenter said) brand that is American Idol.

Therefore, I wonder if he'll ever/continue to be associated with the brand.

Sex or not — I'm sure it comes down to money anyway.

I mean, even look at the likes of David Cook versus David Archuleta. You could say the same thing. Archies fans got comfortable and lazy — but in terms of $$$$ and selling, Archie is out doing Cook by a long shot.

His Christmas CD is blowing up as the moment.

    Thanks for your comments!
