Okay, I can be highly amused for the both of us! 🙂

A Muggle’s Guide to the Wonderful World of Harry Potter…(even if you didn’t read the book!) So going off of yesterday’s Harry Potter for Dummies, I give you an abridged novel guide:

(*Warning:* Spoilers below)

Year One:
• Title: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (The Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States)
• 17 Chapters
• Released: June 30, 1997 (UK), September 1, 1998 (US)
• Sales: ~120 million worldwide
• Timeline: 1981 (end of the First War), 1991-1992 (Harry Potter’s first year at Hogwarts)
• Notable Notes: Character introductions are made. Harry meets Draco getting fitted for robes…sort of. Hagrid is the one who gave Harry Hedwig, Harry’s pet snow owl. Hagrid has a pet as well – a giant, three-headed dog he named ‘Fluffy.’ Ron meets Harry on the Hogwarts Express en route to their first day at Hogwarts. Neville is introduced to the characters as the boy who consistently loses his pet toad. Ron and Harry become friends with Hermione when they save her from a troll. The readers are informed Lord Voldemort is alive…but barely.
• Quirks: Harry makes the Quidditch team as the youngest Seeker in nearly a century.

Year Two:
• Title: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
• 18 Chapters
• Released: July 2, 1998 (UK), June 1999 (US)
• Sales: ~77 million worldwide
• Timeline: 1943 (the time of Tom Marvolo Riddle, Minerva McGonagall, Moaning Myrtle and Rubeus Hagrid at Hogwarts), 1992-1993 (Harry Potter’s second year at Hogwarts)
• Notable Notes: only the heir of Slytherin can release the mythical serpent called the basilisk – Tom Marvolo Riddle is the last surviving descendent of Salazar Slytherin. Hagrid has a ‘thing’ for outrageous creatures, while we know his ‘pet’ from the Sorcerer’s Stone was a giant three-headed dog he named ‘Fluffy,’ we find out that he also had a giant spider when he was a boy he named ‘Aragog.’ Also, Ron doesn’t like spiders and his father’s car is…possessed…we think it just has a mind of its own actually.
• Quirks: Draco Malfoy becomes the Seeker for Slytherin and the word ‘Mudblood’ is introduced.

Year Three:
• Title: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
• 22 Chapters
• Released: July 8, 1999 (UK), September 8, 1999 (US)
• Sales: ~61 million worldwide
• Timeline: 1993-1994 (Harry Potter’s third year at Hogwarts)
• Notable Notes: Harry is introduced to his father’s history and the life of the Marauders who created a magical map of Hogwarts that shows where everyone is, at every single time, of every minute of every day. We learn that Severus Snape went to school with the Marauders (though we suspect and knew before, this was more of a confirmation). We learn that Harry has a godfather named Sirius Black who was a Marauder and the new Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher is, not only a werewolf, but a Marauder, and the Whomping Willow was planted at Hogwarts because of him; Remus Lupin. The Marauders were also each an Animagus (which means they can shape-shift into an animal) – Remus Lupin did not as he was a werewolf, they called him Moony; James Potter was a stag, they called him Prongs; Sirius Black was a dog; they called him Padfoot; Peter Pettigrew was a rat; they called him Wormtail. One of the Marauders, Pettigrew, betrayed the rest, became a Death Eater and was responsible for how Lord Voldemort found James and Lily Potter to kill them.
• Quirks: Pettigrew is actually Scabbers…the Weasley family pet rat.

Year Four:
• Title: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
• 37 Chapters
• Released: July 8, 2000 worldwide
• Sales: ~66 million worldwide
• Timeline: 1942 (Tom Marvolo Riddle’s time) ,1994-1995 (Harry Potter’s fourth year at Hogwarts)
• Notable Notes: this was the first year that book stores implemented the “Midnight Book Parties” and midnight book reserved (limited two per customer please.) This was also the first time the books got “darker” – Rowling killed off her first of many characters to come, with Cedric Diggory. We also find out that there is more than one magical school in the world. Specifically, there is Beauxbatons in France and Durmstrang in ‘the North.’
• Quirks: Harry Potter has his first crush…on Cho Chang. Hermione gets her first boyfriend…Victor Krum. Ron’s crush Fleur Delacour ends up married to his brother Bill in Book Seven.

This is my personal favourite of all the novel hardcover art, released in the US

Year Five:
• Title: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
• 38 Chapters
• Released: June 21, 2003 worldwide
• Sales: ~55 million worldwide
• Timeline: 1995-1996 (Harry Potter’s fifth year at Hogwarts)
• Notable Notes: this was by far the “darkest” of the novels up until this point: Rowling introduced a sadistic witch named Dolores Umbridge into the mix who physically committed torture on Harry Potter and this was also the first time that the author killed off a central and very important character – Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather.
• Quirks: Fred and George Weasley create a ‘swamp’ inside of Hogwarts as a ‘Goodbye’ present to Umbridge…and the Hogwarts professions claim they do not know how to ‘get rid of it.’ At the end a small piece is roped off as a tribute to the Weasley twins. Harry Potter gets his first kiss from …Cho Chang. Harry Potter goes through his first break-up with …Cho Chang. The Order of the Phoenix is housed at Sirius’ family home called No. 12 Grimmauld Place in London. It is kept by a house-elf named Kreacher who has a love-obsession with Bellatrix Lestrange and hordes the Black Family heirlooms into a ‘nest’ he calls his home.

Year Six:
• Title: Harry Potter and the  Half-Blood Prince
• 30 Chapters
• Released: July 16, 2005
• Sales: ~65 million worldwide
• Timeline: 1996-1997 (Harry Potter’s sixth year at Hogwarts)
• Notable Notes: continuing to age the books along with the characters, Rowling continued to mature her novels with the sixth book – Ron has a girlfriend, Dumbledore is sick, the depths of magic are further seen and learned through the eyes of Bellatrix Lestrange, Narcissa Malfoy, Severus Snape and Draco Malfoy. Rowling also kills off main character Albus Dumbledore. Fred and George Weasley open a shop called Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes.
• Quirks: The “Half-Blood Prince” was under huge speculation for the months up until its released. Many wanted to know who the character was. Rowling was always very careful and very blatant in everything she wrote, from the very beginning she placed particular characters and particular scenes in her novels; this was no mistake. Many thought it was a real prince from some royalty, some speculated it was Lord Voldemort himself – others thought maybe it could have been Harry Potter. But no one suspected that
a) the Prince was not royalty, but rather a last name and
b) that it would turn out to be Potions Professor, Death Eater, Order of the Phoenix Member, Head of Slytherin House: Severus Snape. Snape’s mother, Eileen Prince, was a Pureblood witch, his father Tobias Snape was a Muggle.

Year Seven:
• Title: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
• 36 Chapters and an epilogue
• Released: July 21, 2007
• Sales: ~44 million worldwide
• Timeline: 1997-1998 (Harry Potter’s seventh year at Hogwarts), September 1, 2017 (Harry Potter sending his own kids off to Hogwarts)
• Notable Notes: this is the only Harry Potter book that did not start with Harry Potter from his point-of-view. The novel started out with Severus Snape meeting Yaxley at Malfoy Manor for a Death Eater meeting. Kreacher and Harry Potter finally make amends. The Malfoys turn good.

• Quirks: At the end of the Half-Blood Prince, it was highly topical which side was Severus Snape on? Marketing campaigns across the world sprouted posters, stickers and handouts with “Trust Snape” or “Snape is a very bad man.” There were also “Friend” or “Foe” campaigns as well. “There will soon be 7” was also launched which begged the answers to seven questions only to be answered by the seventh book:
1) Who will live? Who will die?
2) Is Snape a friend or foe?
3) Will Hogwarts reopen after Dumbledore’s death? If so, will Harry return?
4) Who ends up with whom? (romantically speaking)
5) Where are the horcruxes and how many are there actually?
6) Will Voldemort be defeated?
7) What in the world are the Deathly Hallows?

• …1) Harry, Hermione, Ron, Hagrid, Ginny, Neville, Luna, the Malfoys etc., – they all live. Fred, Severus, Tonks, Lupin, Dobby, Hedwig, Bellatrix and yes Voldemort etc., – they die.
2) Snape is a FRIEND but EX-Foe – A chapter entitled “The Prince’s Tale” will not only make you weep, but explains seven books and a lifetime in one chapter. It is because of this that in the epilogue we find out that
a) Harry names one of his children Albus SEVERUS Potter
b) tells Severus Potter that it is OKAY to be sorted into Slytherin because
c) Severus Potter was named after “one of the bravest men [Harry] ever knew.”

3) Hogwarts did reopen and Severus Snape was Headmaster.
4) Ron is with Hermione, Harry is with Ginny, Billy is with Fleur.
5) Horcruxes are all over the place – but they are Marvolo Riddle’s Ring, Tom Riddle’s Diary, Helga Hufflepuff’s Cup, Salazar Slytherin’s Locket, Rowena Ravenclaw’s Diadem, Harry Potter and Nagini – there are seven horcruxes in all.
6) Harry Potter defeated Lord Voldemort using Harry Potter’s ‘signature’ spell (as warned by Remus Lupin in Defense lessons in Book Seven) Expelliarmus which is to ‘disarm.’
7) The Deathly Hallows are represented by one image (above) and they are: the Elder Wand, The Ressurection Stone and the Cloak of Invisibility.
• …and just so you know, J.K. Rowling broke a few hearts – quite literally, there were many tears for many people for many different reasons – with this book. Needless to say, personally, A Little Piece of Me Died with Severus Snape.

Inside the 'book' itself

Close-up of gem skull

The Tales of the Beedle Bard
• A book by J.K. Rowling that is based on the same book Albus Dumbledore left in his will for Hermione Granger in Book 7.
• It is considered the last book of the Harry Potter series.
• Originally produced in 2007, a handmade copy, made to resemble one of the books from Hogwarts was auctioned off for £1.95 million ($3.98 million) to Amazon.com. This made it the highest achieved selling price at an auction for any book in literary history.
• The money that was earned was donated to The Children’s High Level Group.
• After becoming owned by Amazon.com, they photographed the pages and put the ‘story’ up on their website.
• In July of 2008 it was announced that the book would go public in both a standard and a collector’s edition.
• It includes commentary and footnotes by Albus Dumbledore.
• Released to the public on December 4, 2008.

Amazon.com delivered it to houses like this. "Attention Muggles Do Not Deliver or Open until December 4"

• Amazon.com (sold for $100 USD)offered the standard copy, as well as, a limited edition in which only 100,000 copies were made (yes, the owner of the Pink Book, me, I so totally have one too! And it arrived via Amazon to me on my birthday!)

My copy, that arrived on my birthday 🙂

• The collector’s edition features ten illustrations by J.K. Rowling not included in the standard edition or the original handmade edition, and it also includes a reproduction of J.K. Rowling handwritten introduction as in the original handwritten version. Basically, the collector’s edition is a replica of the original with some extra perks.
• This book was made to resemble a Hogwarts book.
• Five stories are inside and they are: “The Wizard and the Hopping Pot,” “The Fountain of Fair Fortune,” “The Warlock’s Hairy Heart,” “Babbitty, Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump,” and “The Tale of Three Brothers (see the Deathly Hallows.)”
