Liberating Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert is gay. Are you surprised? More importantly, why do you care?

“I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear I’m gay. I’ve been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man. I’ve been at clubs drunk making out with somebody in the corner.”

With such emphasis on people’s sexual preferences in recent times, I’ve often wondered if our society places too much clout on particular subjects versus others.

So I suppose my biggest question is, while so many people initially thought Lambert was, indeed, a homosexual – what if he wasn’t?

“I started to realize I wasn’t like every other boy. I realized that we all have our own power, and that whatever I wanted to do, I had to make happen. I was like, ‘I’m going to glue rhinestones on my eyelids, bitch!’”

Would society has ostracized him in the other direction for being ‘different.’ Or what if he never truly ‘came out’ – as the likes of Ricky Martin and Clay Aiken never truly did – would he then tally a list of nicknames? Would ‘Gaybert/Glambert’ be Adam’s ‘Gayken,’ as it is to Clay? On that note, why are we so obsessed with nicknames?

“Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, ‘I’m going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler. I didn’t want the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity-magazine bullshit. I need to be able to explain myself in context.”

Personally, I don’t have a problem with anyone’s choices. I’m a firm believer that everyone has free will and has the power to make their own choices in life. I would not condemn or judge someone, just as I would not wish to be judged or ridiculed.

Do unto others and all that jazz…but we aren’t talking about me.

If it the information swung the other way – do you think the reactions would have been the same?

“I’m proud of my sexuality. I embrace it. It’s just another part of me.”

Well, one thing is for sure, the press department at 19 Entertainment is having a very good day today!

“They put me with the cute guy [Kris Allen]. Distracting! He’s the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type — except that he has a wife. I mean he’s open-minded and liberal, but he’s definitely 100% straight.”

P.S., I absolutely love the snake in the photo. How positively Slytherin. :)
