Wild Things, You Make My Childhood Heart Sing

Where the Wild Things Are movie poster 2009

Hope. Fear. Adventure.
Inside of all of us is a
WILD THING!

Updates & trailers at bottom

Our parents read it and so did we. Now with the development looking like it’s about to finally see the light of day, “Where the Wild Things Are” looks to hit theatres October 16.

I heart Spike Jonze. Like I heart him a lot for making something I remember with such fondness come to life. I only hope it’s as beautifully untamed as I remember it from the depths of my subconscious.

The trailer, fueled with distinctive tones by Arcade Fire in a track called “Wake Up,” gives us a pretty decent look of how the our beloved children’s book will play out on the big screen.

Directed by Spike Jonze, the mastermind behind “Being John Malkovich,” the movie has been in limbo for quite sometime. Following various blogs an other reports for the past two years, rumors circulated that the movie was too intense for children, that it was being edited and re-edited and then re-shot. That’s some pretty tough dancing to tango too.

The 1963 Maurice Sendak children’s book tells the story of a young boy named Max; a young boy with a huge imagination. Angry, he throws some bratty antics and causes one mischievous fit after another. Eventually, Max is sent to his room without his supper and that’s where the story truly takes off.

Sad, and mostly angry, Max creates a fantasy world consisting of a forest that borders an enormous ocean. He sets sail to an island inhabited by loads of imaginary monsters called the Wild Things. By staring them in the eye without blinking, he earns their respect and trust. They eventually crown him their ruler.

“I didn’t want to wake you up. But I really want to show you something.” — Where the Wild Things Are film

From what the trailer shows us, it’s quite obvious that Max’s imaginary life is vastly different to his home life. We see him wearing his signature wolf costume and crown, watching his mother from afar contrasted to his school time where he sits bored in class dreaming of his world of special make-believe.

“Inside all of us is hope.”
“Inside all of us is fear.”
“Inside all of us is adventure.”
“Inside all of us is a wild thing.”– Where the Wild Things Are film

If the movie comes out half as enticing and nostalgic as the trailer, it’s pretty safe to say Jonze has done his job very well. We’re excited and you should be too! It’s like our childhood has come to life once more.

So what do you think? Does the trailer (see below) give you a renewed sense of — “Yes!” — making “Where the Wild Things Are” seem just as amazing and incredible as it was when you first read it as a kid?

Well, October cannot come soon enough!

  1. I can’t wait for this movie either!

  2. Sheema, I love the trailer, it’s so great!

  3. Yes, the trailer takes me back to a specific time in my life and I can’t wait to see it. Maurice Sendak was such a big kid! For about 8 years when I just got out of college I taught kindergarten and this was one of my all time favorite books to read to the class. I like to think that everything I learned about “social media and being an adult,” I learned from those eight years with kindergarteners.

  4. Thanks for writing, I truly enjoyed your most recent post. I think you should post more frequently, you obviously have natural ability for blogging!

  5. I remember thinking how much of a bad a** Max was when I was little. Staring down monsters without blinking!? KING of the Wild Things!? AWESOME!

I literally got chills when I saw the first trailer (Arcade Fire's “Wake Up” is perfect). The second one is even better. I can't wait for it to come out.

  6. me too!

    Spot on Tom 🙂
